It is so decided! 2017 EP will be for Malay candidates. How swift! How decisive the PM in completing what he considered his most destined fate to get it done before he leaves office! He is the most qualified n does not want to kick the can down the road.
All very well from his perspective. Totally understandable. Yet, the logic is hardly convincing.
There were the appointment of a committee. Public consultation of sort. The emphasis that the founding principle of meritocracy, even though in recent times more of an elites taking care of "elites" thingy, is not abandoned as the Malay EP candidates must meet the EP criteria.
All very well articulated. Do most Singaporeans care? Not really. Most do believe that the Government knows best. All know now that the PM, seems to hv, wanted a Malay EP asap, for whatever reason.
The USA has its 1st black African American President for 8 years. Did the race relations between the blacks n the white cops increase? The recent cases suggest otherwise.
The PM says it is progressive n for the next 50 years. If in 10 or 20 years, race is still an issue in our nation, we truly r stuck in the mud n regressed.
Anyway, the feeling for me is: why waste time n money for all these work if the intention is clear we want or need a Malay EP? Just come out n say it n be done with it as this is a one dominant party government!!
I too look forward to a 1st Malay EP (after 46 years r irrelevant as the 1st President was NOT an EP!) too like the PM as it is a must hv as deemed by PM.
Ps: WP raised the issue of a Senate is adding complexity to this EP process which, in my mind, should be abolished totally. Honestly a small country like ours should not waste time doing election after election. The government is the be all n end all. Period. Simple n uncomplicated.
After all the laws say: the government can veto the veto of the EP if deemed appropriate. So, WHY wayang again??
All the best to Singapore.
