What should I blog about today with 2 pieces of news in minds - 1. the lawyer who is defending the murderous rapists in New Delhi claiming police brutality against his clients and that he has NOT heard of any rape regarding 'respectable ladies'!; or 2. Punggol SMC by-election turning into a multi-corner contests?
Maybe I should comment on both as briefly and as concise as I can.
1. The Murderous Rapists and their Lawyer
There was a moment when NO lawyers in India will defend these murderous rapists as the Indian Bars and Lawyers Association said as much. That would not be right as the laws do provide defenses for ANY accused. The accused is innocent until proven guilty.
BUT the claim by this lawyer that he has NOT known of a rape case against RESPECTABLE lady, and that rape victims are to blame is SIMPLY sad and DEEPLY disturbing.
Even if we put aside the 'who is to blame' bit, the way the dead victim was brutalized and savaged attack is GOOD ENOUGH for any righteous person to reach for: This CANNOT be the right way to treat a lady, ANY lady. In fact, ANY human being!!
I seriously hope this case will not be turned on TECHNICALITY as laws sometimes allowed such things to miscarry justice. e.g. the police brutality!!
I am no religious man but I will pray to a higher being to make sure this is not where it is going. It will be an even bigger tragedy if these murderous rapists get away with their senseless and barbaric crime and murder of the Daughter of India!!
2. Multi-corner Fight for the Punggol SMC By-Election on 26 Jan 2013
In the Hougang SMC by-election last year, it was a 2-way fight between the WP candidate (being the party that triggered the need to have the by-election with the sacking of the incumbent MP from WP) and the strong PAP candidate. The voters decided to give it to the WP candidate. As expected. And some might add, 'Thankfully!'.
In this PAP triggered by-election, the opposition parties besides the WP are all raring to have a go at it. This CANNOT be good for WP's chance to 'dramatically' snatch another MP seat in the parliament as the voters will be split. Much like the 3-corner fight in the Elected Presidential election held last year where the people's choice, ex-MP Tan Cheng Bock, lost to the eventual winner, President Tony Tan, by a narrow margin.
Will the oppositions agree to let WP take the lead? At this point in time, it prognosis does not look good. I guessed the other opposition parties felt they had been living in the WP's shadow for too long and want to assert themselves by trying to get one of their members to become a MP.
From that perspective, one cannot fault them. At the same time, WHO has the BEST chance of defeating the PAP candidate SHOULD be the deciding factor.
Another history making moment or a missed opportunity? Only the opposition parties can decide. A WP win is NOT a sure thing but yet it is the BEST bet in the current situation.
