"Doctor at heart of HIV data leak claims he lied to police to 'retaliate' against MOH 'discrimination'
SINGAPORE: A doctor at the centre of the HIV data leak from Singapore's registry told the High Court on Monday (Mar 11) he had lied to the police in 2016 when he admitted to cheating offences.
Ler Teck Siang, who was convicted of the offences in 2018, claimed he had lied in his police statement to "retaliate" against the Ministry of Health's (MOH) "discrimination" of his sexual orientation.
The 37-year-old was appealing against his conviction and two-year jail sentence for abetting partner Mikhy Farrera Brochez to cheat the Ministry of Manpower (MOM) regarding Brochez's HIV-positive status, and of giving false information to the Ministry of Health (MOH) and the police."
This particular situation once again shows that: "Rationality will always (if i ever want to get myself in an un-winnable deabte!) be overwhelmed by Emotion".
For a well educated n professionally trained medical doctor where much had been invested, it totally defies logics for his line of defence!
As the Head of Public Health unit, how can the potential leak of 14k+ HIV-positive people NOT b in his consideration?
Sure some folks in the world discriminate against HIV positive people even though it is no longer the death sentence it used to b when breaking into full blown aids.
To then put these people's lives in difficulties as some live in very conservative societies n ruining their lives cannot b justified at all.
Sure it would b great, at least in Sgp, to make this "lemon" episode into "lemonade" by widening ths sunderstanding abt HIV n aids. N that whether they contracted it through innocent blood transfusion or careless sharing of drug through needles or unprotected sexual intercourse r irrelevant as HIV positive is NOT a death sentence.
Of course for the moralists n those against LGBTQ folks, those that contracted HIV r their just payback. Still, if they r productive human being at work n normal life, their livelihood n personal life should not be destroyed ya?
I hope the judge will give this Dr Ler his just punishment for his irresponsible behaviours. Poor judgement calls that hurt innocent people with HIV!!
