"Cyclist, lorry driver involved in viral Pasir Ris altercation arrested
SINGAPORE - The lorry driver and cyclist who were involved in an altercation in Pasir Ris on Saturday (Dec 22) have been arrested in relation to the case.
ST understands that the lorry driver, 57, was arrested for rash driving. The cyclist, 35, was arrested for rash riding and mischief.
Meanwhile, a second video showing the aftermath of the altercation has gone viral after it emerged on social media on Monday morning.
The Straits Times reported earlier that the police were alerted to the accident, which took place at the junction of Pasir Ris Drive 3 and Pasir Ris Rise, at 11.53am.
The earlier video, also posted by Roads.sg, has chalked up 2.1 million views since it was posted on the day of the incident.
The original video shows one of the cyclists riding in the middle of the lane in front of the lorry, leading the lorry driver to honk at him twice.
The cyclist stopped at the traffic junction in front of the lorry and continued to obstruct the vehicle even as it moved away from the junction.
He later moved to the left of the lane but hit the side mirror of the lorry as he was doing so.
The lorry driver then swerved towards the cyclist, knocking him off the road and onto the grass next to the road.
The driver claimed that he swerved left as he heard a sound and thought he might have hit a taxi to his right.
He added that he had no idea that videos of the incident had been taken, or that they had become viral."
This episode is really educational. It informed what could had happened when emotions got out of hands in modern days living! It also underlies the "I hv the right" attitide, which is laudable if not dangerous when the other party might not know that "rights one is asserting is RIGHT!!".
My takes:
1. cyclist is RIGHT to occupy the whole lane for safety reason. It is n
common to see cyclists in pairs occupying a lane. This is especially so for cyclists fr the European countries as they hv fairly established cyclists m drivers protocol/custom (n even traffics laws n rules);
2. Sgp drivers may not know this is the Cyclist's RIGHT to occupy a lane. Having said that: there is NO EXCUSE for any driver to nudge any cyclist off the road as the video showed. Though the driver claimed here he swerved left as he heard a sound (his left mirror got knocked off by that cyclist) n thot he had hit a taxi on his right!!;
3. the Cyclist is obviously wrong to knocked the left mirror of the lorry off. It was a reckless n uncivilised act! Provocative for sure;
4. assuming the lorry driver's claim is validated, the swerve could hv seriously hurt or even killed the cyclist! That would be tragic! For both the cyclist n the driver!! NONE of them would hv wanted that outcomes when they set out that morning for a ride n for work!! They BOTH should thanked their lucky stars.
When both calm down, they probably will b embarrassed n grateful.
The cyclist embarassed by his provocative destructive actions n grateful he wasn't hurt badly or killed. The driver, if his claim was just to covered up his temporary anger at the cyclist n decided to nudge him over, embarassed by his out-of-control rage n grateful he has not seriously hurt or killed the cyclist!
Now that both had been arrested by the TP, I just hope that they will just reflect, thank their lucky stars no one got hurt badly n learn their lessons.
It is an one-off emotional responses by both involved parties. No one has to go to jail or be fined for this episode!! YES?
