Daily Lessons from Life 16 December 2018 - War on Diabetes!

"Diabetes risk, weight gain: The possible bitter effects of too many sugary drinks

SINGAPORE: Mr Ritz Jaafar consumes two cans of soft drink every day - a habit the 44-year-old started as a teenager.

The two cans he has now are a far cry from about a year ago, when he was downing seven to eight cans in a day. A wake-up call came in the form of a high blood sugar reading when he went for a medical check-up.

While aware that the sugary drinks could be paving the path to diabetes, Mr Ritz has not been able to cut them out from his daily routine.

“I am addicted to the caffeine and the sugar rush,” the bar manager told Channel NewsAsia.

The drinks that Mr Ritz prefers contain high amounts of sugar, with a 320ml can of regular Coca Cola containing 33.9g of sugar, which is equivalent to six and three-quarters teaspoons. Kickapoo does not provide information on the total amount of sugar in a can of the fruity beverage.

His daily habit means that he consumes more than 12kg of sugar in a year, equivalent to 2,400 teaspoons, just from these drinks.

He is also highly likely to be busting his recommended sugar limit.

The Health Promotion Board (HPB) recommends that added sugar should contribute to no more than 10 per cent of dietary energy. For a typical male with a 2,200 kcal energy requirement, this translates to 40 to 55g, or eight to 11 teaspoons of sugar daily.

This limit includes sugar added to beverages as well as food such as cakes and candies. According to HPB, drinking an additional 250ml of sugar-sweetened beverages every day increases a person’s risk of diabetes by 18 to 26 per cent.

It is such sugar intake that the Ministry of Health (MOH) is working to reduce among Singaporeans in its continued war against diabetes. Almost half a million Singaporeans live with diabetes, higher than the global prevalence."

The War in Diabetes (WoD) was declared in 2016. 2017 NDR Speech by PM Lee created some recognition of the health issue through some negative reading of: "Why the PM is talking abt this instead of nation building n economy!"

The truth is: diabetes CAN cause a lot of other health complications n diseases n the health care costs n loss of productivity of the afflicted persons n the burdens on their caregivers can easily adds up to a very significant economic loss!!

Of course, dollars n cents can NEVER describe the emotional pains n anguish experienced by someone who had to hv a limp amputated due to diabetes complication.

So, it is a very serious issue we must face up to.

Cutting sugars in our drinks n our foods must be recognised as essential basic 1st step. This includes reducing carbs that turn into sugar if not burned!

Besides this critical 1st step, keeping a balance n adequate portion control, n regular exercises (mind n body) are also important. Adopting a healthy lifestyles is the ultimate sustainable approach to successfully combating type2 (T2) diabetes. T2 Diabetes r non-genetic n largely due to unhealthy lifestyle of too much sugars, inadequate exercises n unbalanced n inappropriate portion control!!

The T2 Diabetes hv to take control n do whichever way that work best for themselves n Just Do It!

Old habits r hard to change. Yet, if no action is taken after knowing what need to b done, nothing will change. T2 Diabetes will simply just deteriorate. No If or But here!!

Blessed the T2 Diabetes n their loved ones n all involved to heal n care for them!!
