Daily Lessons from Life 25 September 2018 - 377A again by Prof Koh

"Singapore'Antiquated' law 377A should be repealed: Tommy Koh

SINGAPORE: Veteran diplomat Tommy Koh called again for the repeal of Section 377A of the Penal Code, which criminalises gay sex, in an opinion piece published by The Straits Times on Monday (Sep 24).

The Ambassador-at-Large at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs is one of the prominent personalities to have spoken out against the legislation after India's Supreme Court struck down a similar law early in September.

"I would encourage our gay community to bring a class action to challenge the constitutionality of Section 377A," Professor Koh, 80, wrote in response to a Facebook post a day after the Indian ruling.

DJ Johnson Ong has since taken up his call and filed a challenge against the law.

Addressing the calls of Christianand Muslim religious groups to retain Section 377A, he said: "It is not the business of the state to enforce the dogmas of those religions. In Singapore, there is a separation between religion and the state. Church leaders and Islamic leaders should respect that separation."

He called on Christian and Muslim leaders to refrain from "pressuring the Government to criminalise conduct which they consider sinful"."

He has written on this again despite some folks' dismay. N it is published in our national newspapers no less.

He has laid out strong scientific case that homosexuality is natural as one is born into it. Of course, it is easier if it is taken as a "unnatural natural" since homosexual cannot reproduce.

Anyway, he calls out the religious leaders not to "pressure" the gov to criminalise homosexuality n this will definitely not go down well as they feel strongly that homosexuality is unnatural, period!

Maybe Prof Koh can declare he is not gay n this is purely a matter of getting the laws right.

Also, we should ask: why can't homosexual folks cannot b teachers? why should they b discriminated if they r qualified?

Like i said in the past, i hv no issue with lgbtq folks as co-workers n fellow human being if they r professional, do their jobs well n live in peace n harmony with the non-lgbtq.

Yes?
