"Myanmar says two Reuters journalists remanded in custody
YANGON: The two Reuters journalists who were detained in Myanmar on Dec. 12 have appeared in court and been remanded in custody, a police spokesman said on Thursday.
"Yes, they were sent to the court," said police colonel Myo Thu Soe. "The remand has already been obtained. The case is under the Burma State Secrets Act ... so, for now, they are not allowed to meet with anyone and they are being investigated."
Reporters Wa Lone and Kyaw Soe Oo have been in detention for nine days with no detail on where they are being held. They have not had access to visitors or lawyers.
Pan Ei Mon, Wa Lone's wife, said she was told by police on Thursday that both journalists were well and she was allowed to leave food and clothes for them.
The authorities are investigating whether they violated the country's colonial-era Official Secrets Act, which carries a maximum prison sentence of 14 years.
The two journalists had worked on Reuters coverage of a crisis in the western state of Rakhine, where an estimated 655,000 Rohingya Muslims have fled from a fierce military crackdown on militants."
When the Nobel Peace Prize (which has been, was, is n will be, controversial) winner became the defacto state counsellor in the hard won democratic election a few years back. Hope were high for more opennss n the country will just go on to be great! Alas, reality is not matching the fairy tales expectation! In fact, FAR FROM IT!!
The Oxford educated defacto State Counsellor' honorary membership of Oxford was removed for her lack of actions on the alleged genocide of the Rohingyas.
The UN Commissioner of Humanitis is accusing her government of actions akin to genocides n also obstructing the attempts by UN to understand if there were such inhuman n atrocious behaviours.
All very disturbing n leaving very sour taste of an unfulfilled promise! Or maybe the expectations r just unrealistic as the ones who hold the guns control the fate of this young democratic government?
Or maybe the religious bit is so overwhelmingly powerful that event professed Buddhists will kill the Rohingyas who r mainly Muslim!! Of course in my books the moment u kill another human being, actually even an ant, u cannot be a Buddhist!!
A depressing thot to live with as 2017 draws to an end.
When u thot there were progress, regression actual took place.
