Daily Lessons from Life 26 October 2017 - What is a STRONG China?

"Many watching to see what a 'strong China' means: PM Lee

Mr Lee, speaking at a dialogue session at the Council on Foreign Relations during his official working visit to the US, said: “They mentioned a new era; Mao’s era, Deng’s era and now Xi’s era - which he envisages extending to 2050 and taking China to 100 years after the revolution.”

Responding to questions about how Mr Xi’s own consolidation of power might see him exercise China’s power going forward, Mr Lee said: “If you look for difference in emphasis, it’s what the Chinese themselves say.

"With Mao, China stands up. With Deng, they have gotten wealthy and now with Xi, they are strong. What does 'strong' mean?”

Mr Lee said this is something everybody will be watching carefully.

Asked what he thought a "strong China" would mean, Mr Lee said Mr Xi outlined this during his long opening speech at the party congress, starting with how the CCP must be fully in charge, sustain economic growth, environmental considerations and the welfare of the people. He also mentioned a strong armed forces."

President Xi (soon to be Chairman(?) Xi) is a visionary leader with great ambition.

Economically it has grown much since Chairman Deng's "get rich" vision that fired the imgaination of the world to want to be in China to be considered a truly global business. Some of the blind adoption of the capitalistic world practices like growth through real estate development, growth at the expenses of killing the environment, use of derivative future n debts to grow now using future money n speculations r unfortunate.

President Xi's "housing is for living n NOT for speculating" is wise. Hope he n his
 team know when the young cannot afford a home, there will n troubles eventually.

Leaving the many things to be achieved (most concerned domestic issues that r strictly for the Chinese themselves to sort out) under his "get strong" vision, how China will work with the rest of the nations is of concerns to us.

I envisioned a "strong PRC China" that will:

1. fight fiercely anyone who try to split the country in Hkg SAR, Taiwan, Tibet n Xinjiang;

2. be better than the hegemony it once despised n vowed not to be: an international bully or coloniser;

3. understand that exploiting others as those colonizing powers that once ruled some parts of China will be defeated if the local people r not treated properly. i.e. their "help" n businesses in Africa n other developing countries hv to be fair n really mutually beneficial to be sustainable;

4. be aware that if they killed the environment they live in through "growth at all costs" approach, they will become weak n sick as the air, water n soils become polluted;

5. that wars cannot be something it starts like those started by the USA in many parts of the world!!

He will hv to manage these for the international audience. It is NOT for anyone to tell him what to do n not do.

Of course, the USA n it's allies will try to block or provoke for their own interests though working together with China and Russia n Germany-led EU is a much better world vision. So how the USA views the rise of a strong China will influence how China respond.

Peace n stability in the region is the foundation to build prosperity n enjoy it. Enough said!!
