Daily Lessons from Life 22 August 2017 - fatal eBike hit n run

"Man arrested for fatal e-bike hit-and-run accident

SINGAPORE: Police on Tuesday (Aug 22) said a 49-year-old man has been arrested for alleged involvement in a fatal hit-and-run accident involving an e-bike.

Police released photos of the suspect the day before, and had urged people with information to come forward.

The suspect is believed to have collided with a 78-year-old man outside McDonald's at Jalan Bukit Merah, towards Queensway, at about 6.35am last Thursday.

Police said the e-bike rider left the scene before officers arrived.

The pedestrian suffered serious head injuries and died on Saturday.

Police investigations are ongoing."

Not sure if this is the 1st of its kind hit-n-run fatality case involving an eBike.

The signs were there that this could happened.

With the intention to promote a healthy lifestyle of eating well n exercising well, we may want to hv a rethink abt the purpose of personal mobility devices (PMD) for otherwise normal "healthy" persons.

Is there a need for these people to hv a PMD that travels more than 8km/hr? A speed slightly faster than brisk walking?

At 8km/hr max, the force of impact can still be fairly great for an older person or a fairly young child, hopefully it would not be so forceful that it will cause death.

In fact, PMD r for the frail n weak n they hv no need to be in a rush. For those healthy ones, they can probably run faster than 8km/hr n has no need for electrically assisted PMD!!

Let's be BOLD n try this out. Maybe it will save mite lives than u think! Maybe it makes more sense than to set the speed limit at 15km or 20km per hr!!

RIP to the old man. Condolences to the family n friends. How would the "rider" feel now and a life he took away by "accident:?
