Ms Yip, a 24-year old who was born with muscular dystrophy, won another Paralympic Gold medal, only this time she did it with a new World Record!
This is good news. An inspirational story. Successful sports persons are gifted in most cases and with enormous hard work and sacrifices. To be at the top of one's sport, he or she must absolutely give his or her all to get there. Then, the harder work starts ... to stay top!
Ms Yip's achievement has brought much job and pride to Singapore and Singaporeans. This so soon after the euphoria after Joseph Schooling's Olympic Gold and Olympic Record 100m Butterfly less than 3 weeks ago! Double joys and double prides. No doubt. Just reading the number of political figures posting their congratulations you can tell how excited they are to capitalize on this achievement.
Yet, I feel that it is not a political issue. Ms Yip's message of, as reported, 'hope this win will unite Singaporeans' can be rephrased to: 'Just enjoy the victory.' Harmony in Singapore and between races and social classes is not really in a bad place.
While the wins, both Joseph and hers, can raise nationalism and patriotism, the national unity is really not in a bad place!
If we start counting the race of the Olympians and Paralympians, it will be a bad start. We should never do that.
It is just Singaporean sportsperson winning for Singapore. As simple as that.
Once again, congratulations to Ms Yip. I salute you and admire you. A champion and a fighter. May some medical advances be found that will help with arresting the terrible conditions you are born with. Stem cell treatment? or something else?
