Daily Lessons from Life 15-16 August 2016 - Still on Joseph's Olympics Win & Contempt of Cours Law

1. Joseph's win at the 2016 Rio Olympics 100m Butterfly

Apparently quite a few people feel pretty strongly about the government and some officials claiming credit for Joseph's achievement!

A main stream journalist for the national broadsheet wrote that: 'it would have been perfect or sweeter' if the supports from all quarters were more forthcoming instead of after Joseph's unprecedented feat!

Well, as long as the 'late supporters' acknowledge that they come after the initial totally Joseph's parent and his own dedication and sacrifices to support Joseph and his crew, it is fine.

It will be too much if the 'late supporters' claimed that they were instrumental for Joseph's feat!

p/s: great to read about Joseph's appearance at his old primary school. Indeed, he is starting to deliver more than his sporting achievement. Inspiring the young and be that role model that is very hard to maintain!

2. A 'new' Contempt of Courts law passed after a 7-hr debate

Reading the arguments by the opposition political MPs (elected and otherwise) against the 'change' that leave 'substantially the same laws', as described by the Law Minister cum Home Affairs, it is a case of 'there are leeway for the in-power authority' to use it to its own advantage IF it has an agenda or motivation that is different from the individual who expresses comments that can be interpreted as 'not in the interest of the public' and can be charged for contempt of courts.

This is perhaps what concerned the liberal West, including the British Commission in S'pore that was criticised by the Minister of Laws, for expressing such concerns!

It has already, as described by one of the opposition MPs, been bulldozed through. So, let's see how the government will use this 'new' definition to ensure that concerned individual does not comments on cases that are controversial as they may by expressing comments that are deemed contempt of courts!
