Daily Lessons from Life 26 March 2016 - Bukit Batok by-election: SDP unveils campaign slogan

"Bukit Batok by-election: SDP unveils campaign slogan - CNA 26 Mar 2016

SINGAPORE: The Singapore Democratic Party (SDP) on Saturday (Mar 26) announced its campaign slogan for the Bukit Batok by-election as “Now is the time”.
Party chief Dr Chee Soon Juan will contest the Bukit Batok single seat, vacated after People’s Action Party (PAP) representative David Ong resigned over an extramarital affair with a grassroots activist. The ruling party has put forth lawyer Murali Pillai as its candidate.
“‘Now is the time’ is a rallying call to Bukit Batok residents that evokes a sense of urgency to send SDP's candidate Chee Soon Juan to Parliament to speak up for them,” said a media statement by the party.
The SDP also said it would begin distributing campaign cards with the slogan to Bukit Batok residents. As displayed on the SDP’s Facebook page, the campaign cards include a message promising that if elected, the party will within 100 days of taking over, publish an interim financial report, disclose handover processes, announce a town council budgetary plan and produce a 12-month work plan amongst other initiatives.
Meanwhile, Member of Parliament (MP) for Jurong Group Representation Constituency (GRC) Ang Wei Neng, who took over from Mr Ong as chairman of the Jurong-Clementi Town Council, said residents are generally happy about the service level in Bukit Batok.
He said he hopes for more resident involvement so that they feel they have a stake in the community.
"If the residents of Bukit Batok continue to give us their support, and after the by-election, if they continue to give us a chance to serve them, we'll definitely keep Bukit Batok as part of the Jurong-Clementi Town Council," said Mr Ang. "So with this, there's better economies of scale, so we can help them to better negotiate with the vendors and other contractors, for a better price for the residents.""

"Now is the Time" is an interesting slogan and battle cry for SDP. Dr Chee has changed quite a bit since last folly smashing his head against the libel law of Singapore. He thought the wind was behind him and his party in GE2015 but was sadly mistaken and defeated. 'Now is the time' for him in this by-election? Maybe. Maybe not!

1. Bukit Batok is famous, or rather, infamous for been a rat nest! Rat infestation was rampant last year! It made the national broadsheet headlines and front page! Pest controllers were called in. Poison sent the rats way. Yet, some seemed to have survived the holocaust!;

2. besides the rats infestation episode, are there any other bread-and-butter issues that irked the residents and voters in the last few months since GE2015? IF not, would the voters heed the call by Dr Chee and his party that: 'It is the time' to send him to the parliament to SPEAK OUT for the voters, assuming that the last MP Mr Ong did not do this to the satisfaction of most of the voters! Will the voters grant Dr Chee's wish?;

3. of it would not matter as the voters, in the knowledge that it is JUST but a by-election where the PAP is, and will be, the government till the next GE, will simply want to put another opposition party member into parliament. Another opposition party besides the dominant WP! This would be a strategic move IF the voters are so farsighted and daring! Nothing beats watching how the parliament will work with 2 political parties' members in it. Some may say Ms Chiam Lena was the other opposition MP besides those from the WP, many would say it will be different if Dr Chee is FORMALLY elected in this by-election. More legitimacy, some would say!

Whatever it may be, may the best man win not just because of his oratorical skills or acting skills but because the voters had decided to 'test' the democratic process a bit!
