"Tan Cheng Bock will make second bid for presidency - The Straits Times 11 Mar 2016
SINGAPORE - Dr Tan Cheng Bock, who lost in the 2011 Presidential Election, said on Friday (March 11) he will make a second bid for the presidency.
The next presidential election must be held by August next year.
"The election is 17 months away. I feel it's now timely to state my decision. I intend and will contest the coming Presidential Election in 2017," Dr Tan, 75, said at a press conference."
17 months away from the date when the EP must be elected and Dr Tan Cheng Bock made his move. It is easy NOT to associate this as a pre-emptive strike to sway the EP Committee NOT to pick a criteria that say: person above 75 years of age CANNOT qualify!
It would be too much of a coincident to have that as one of the criteria when the EP Committee announced its 'new' requirements of a EP candidate.
Will he win this time? Who in the ex-PAP ranks can the PAP called upon to be the EP candidate? We will have to wait for it, assuming he is not disqualified due to his age!
For me, honestly I feel that this EP thingy is totally unnecessary. The check-on-balance should be in the parliamentary system itself instead of another institution like the EP.
Also, if there is no talent around, we simply have to accept whoever comes forward to be the EP right?
Now the 'killer' of this EP will be if the EP Election will come up with something like: 'age must be < 75yrs old!!
