"Chai Chee's good Samaritan, find out why he inherited flat from neighbour - The Straits Times 28 Feb 2016
Step out of the lift on the ninth floor of Block 23, Chai Chee Road at lunchtime and you will notice the smell of food being cooked.
The aroma comes from a two-room rental flat in which retiree Tan Cheng Tey, 65, and his Filipino wife, Ms Maria Malana, 46, keep busy in a tiny kitchen.
When The Sunday Times visited them yesterday at noon, they were cooking fried egg and curry chicken for about 40 residents in the area.
The couple have been providing free lunches to the needy in their neighbourhood, almost every day, for five years.
Mr Tan's charity work was featured in the news last week, when it was revealed that his 66-year-old neighbour, Mr Teo, left his three-room flat to him.
Mr Teo, who lived alone and died of cancer last October, received free lunches from Mr Tan for three years. Mr Teo also left Mr Tan all his savings of about $20,000.
Residents are thankful for Mr Tan's generosity and some, such as Madam Phang Ean Lan, 57, have even helped in their own simple ways. She provides coffee for the residents every Saturday.
Mr Tan said he has gained more satisfaction helping the poor, compared with his younger days as a businessman. He added: "You don't need a big amount of capital to help people. You just need a willing heart. If you do it from your heart, you'll find a way to help others.""
A good story to share as it is rare to find such genuinely sincere and helpful people!
1. will someone said Mr Tan 'conned' Mr Teo into giving his flat to Mr Tan? Maybe there are sceptical few. Hopefully many more can see that this the case of 'a good act attracting another good act'. Yes. There are STILL some people on this commercial and highly materialistic world that are NOT greedy!;
2. does Mr Tan deserves that gift from Mr Teo? Honestly, none of us are qualified to comment as Mr Teo, being the sole owner, has absolutely power to gift to whoever he wants to. Sure, some want to make sure that the gift was given with Mr Teo's free will and fully cognisant of his actions as there are simply so many wicked people who preyed on the lonely, sick and confused elderly. In this case, it is unlikely that someone will do what Mr Tan and his wife had done - to serve free lunch for the last 5 years voluntarily! To doubt this act of charity must mean that the doubters are not just sceptical but super sceptical and might actually had been cheated before!;
3. it is worthy to note that Mr Tan had a change of perspective when he realised: 'less is more!' after a life changing accident! He is a lucky man to have that experience. Many do not, and will not, and probably NOT change his/her perspective on life. It is a bit SAD that human being needs such life changing experience to really SHIFT their perspective.
May some of us reflect on this and change our perspective of life to: 'Less is more!'
