Daily Lessons from Life 17 August 2015 - Explosion rocks Bangkok commercial hub, killing 27: Thai media

I heard the loud bang in my hotel room after coming back from the gym! I thought nothing of it as there were no alarms nor alerts posted by the hotel, Holiday Inn Bangkok, near the bomb explosion site!! YES. I am ACTUALLY very near this BREAKING NEWS item! Surreal!!

"Explosion rocks Bangkok commercial hub, killing 27: Thai media - CNA/AFP/REUTERS 17 August 2015

BANGKOK: A bomb exploded outside a religious shrine in central Bangkok on Monday evening, killing scores of people. At least 16 people were killed in the incident, according to Thai police. Meanwhile, local media put the death toll at 27, with more than 80 injured.
The blast occurred about 6.30pm when the streetside shrine was packed with worshippers and tourists. Body parts were scattered across the street after the explosion outside the Erawan Shrine in the downtown Chidlom district of the Thai capital.

The first explosive device went off near a Skytrain station. A second one was found near the Erawan Shrine and the bomb squad was deactivating a third as of 9pm. At 10.30pm, all the explosives found were defused, according to a Channel NewsAsia reporter.

Thailand's Defence Minister said the bomb had targeted "foreigners" to try to damage the vital tourist industry. "It was a TNT bomb... the people who did it targeted foreigners and to damage tourism and the economy," Prawit Wongsuwong said. The Thai police chief said the first blast was equivalent to 200 pounds of TNT, according to local media reports.
Local television channel The Nation quoted Thai Prime Minister Prayuth Chan-ocha as saying the government will set up a "war room" to coordinate the response to the blast.
There were foreigners among the casualties, reported Reuters, citing The Nation. Most of the injured were tourists from China and Taiwan, the report added. Local media also said a nearby hospital was scrambling for Chinese translators, adding that some schools in the area will be closed on Tuesday.

The Erawan is an enormously popular shrine to the Hindu god Brahma but is visited by thousands of Buddhist devotees every day.

It is located on a main road through Bangkok's commercial hub and is surrounded by three major shopping malls.
Police and ambulances rushed to the scene after the bomb went off around 7pm (8pm Singapore time)."

Lessons for me are:

1. dastardly act by cowards HAPPENED! There is no shortage of such sick people with a warped mind and logic of 'kill the innocent and the majority will SUPPORT our causes'!! Twisted logic embraced by lunatics??;

2. when these perpetrators are caught, they CANNOT be tried as 'lunatics'. They must be tried as 'spineless cowardice murderers' with cold calculated logic to create panics and fear in ordinary people who had no business with whatever cause the murderers are obsessed with. The gory photos of body parts and broken dead bodies on the street and near the shrine will be circulated globally. The innocent tourists, and there were quite a few of them among the dead, will stop coming to Thailand. The innocent citizens and businesses of Thailand will suffer a drop in visitors. Just as the terrorists had achieved in its brutal attacks and killing of tourists in Tunisia! A collapse of one of the main component of the nation's economy!;

3. Could I had been among the injured, or even the dead, since the hotel I stayed in is so near the junction where the bomb went off? I have walked past the Four-Face Buddha Erawan Shrine in my past visit! I could have visited it HAD I GONE out to have dinner! It is crazy! Unreal to find myself watch 'breaking news on CNN, CNA and BBC, etc' after hearing the loud bang with totally no inkling it was a bomb explosion that maimed and killed more than 17 innocent people!

RIP to the dead and condolences to the family, friends and colleagues.

Shame to the murderous plotters. Cowards!

p/s: If it was, as rumoured, that this act was carried out by the so-called 'Red shirts', they just shot themselves in the face as NO thinking Thais will endorse killing the lifeblood of the country's foreign exchange earners - tourism! The 'perpetrators' had just turned away any moral supporters.
