"Opposition state of play: Who’s running where in the upcoming General Election? - CNA 10 August 2015
SINGAPORE: A week after the Opposition first met to lay claim and discuss the constituencies they would contest at the upcoming General Election, it appears the parties have managed to strike a compromise to avoid multi-corner fights in all but one of the 29 electoral divisions.
Following announcements on Monday (Aug 10) by Singaporeans First and the National Solidarity Party, it appears that only the single seat of Potong Pasir – the smallest constituency on the political landscape – may see a three-cornered contest – and only because of an independent candidate, who has said he would throw his hat into the ring."
This will be interesting with 'straight fight' in most of the electoral constituencies, GRC or SMC, with only 1 SMC that may have a 3-corner fight.
Lessons for me are:
1. the 'election season' is here as announced by the PAP Organizing Secretary, Dr Ng Eng Hen in his walkabout today. So, looks like 12 September 2015 as the Polling Day is gaining credence and the bookies are probably going to close that bet soon! LOL;
2. with the 'straight fight', it is a deciding show of confidence by the voters to the ruling party, PAP if it wins in all the contested seats and MORE! It means the voters are more convinced than in GE2011 that the ruling party has run a good government that truly pay attention to the legitimate dissatisfaction and unhappiness of the voters. It can only lead to a stronger government with a dominant party!;
3. the opposition parties would definitely fancy their chances given that they have shown unity and made pragmatic decision to avoid multi-corner fight. Even those that had legitimate ground to insist due to their last contest in the same or similar electoral constituencies in GE2011. It is good to see that. At the same time it also means that IF they are not as successful as in GE2011, they still have a lot of work to do to convince the voters that they are for real!
Whatever it maybe, it is good to see a 'real' contest taking shape. How each party and their candidates will campaign and share their visions with the voters in the coming weeks that lead to the polling day will be plenty to digest, analyse, reflect and project!
