Watched 'TalkingPoint' on CNA tonight about the MRT Trains Breakdown challenge and was surprised to find the CEO of LTA present BUT NOT the Group CEO of SMRT Corp!!
Hopefully Mr Kuek, the Group CEO of SMRT Corp is ok physically. It is strange that the CEO of LTA is present while he is not present! A bit like the farce in KL recently where Dr Mahathir turned up while PM Najib did not!
Anyway, points glanced from the Talking Point show are:
1. it is extraordinary that NSEW Lines all came down at the same time! Unprecedented. If one must rubbed salt into the wounds, just after Mr Kuek publicly said they are improving!;
2. all standby bus drivers and staff of SMRT Corp were activated that fateful night and YET commuters did not feel that MUCH HAD BEEN DONE. Or that those activated SMRT employees weren't really sure of what they need to do, what to say, etc;
3. interesting to note some 'retired' SMRT Corp maintenance folks, at least one of them was on the phone calling in, offered his take on the 'old' tracks and system! One other audience tweeted that: '... it is not time to listen to the Senior Bosses of SMRT Corp but time for the BOSSES to listen to their maintenance and ground staff!' The stand-in for Mr Kuek from SMRT Corp must be feeling very embarrassed and stressed! No wonder our S$2+m is not appearing on this show!;
4. one overriding factor that got thrown around quite a bit is OBVIOUS to EVERYONE! That the '1st line is old and near or at End-of-Life (EOL)' so problems are expected. OF COURSE breakdowns are expected with EOL machines and system. Since EOL is in sight or had arrived, WHAT had SMRT Corp planned to ensure that 'old' system that breakdowns get fixed quickly to avoid the FINE, which go to the Government, who, hopefully not, put in MONEY to help SMRT Corp to fix the 'public transportation system'!!
Honestly, this PUBLIC Transportation policy needs to be looked at AGAIN!
p/s: Some folks are still waiting to learn IF SMRT Corp had made any money from part of the S$1B 'Bus Enhancement Initiative' where public fund is used to 'assist' so-called public listed company like SMRT Corp!!
