Daily Lessons from Life 18-19 June 2015 - CDAC to focus on elderly, low-income workers and students

1. "Malaysia's Land Public Transport Commission CEO 'misquoted' on High Speed Rail terminus - CNA 19 June 2015

Singapore's Ministry of Transport earlier said it was "surprised" that Malaysia's Land Public Transport Commission had said in an interview that it preferred to terminate the upcoming high-speed rail terminus in JB. However, the commission says its CEO was misquoted."

Hmm, more than meet the eyes or just truly the CEO was 'misquoted'? Let's hope no one is trying to throw a spanner into the gears and jammed or destroyed the HSR project between Malaysia and Singapore. A project promoted by the PM of BOTH countries publicly and prominently!

Stay tune!!

2. "CDAC to focus on elderly, low-income workers and students - CNA 19 June 2015

SINGAPORE: The Chinese Development Assistance Council's (CDAC) programmes this year will focus on three key thrusts: the elderly, low-income workers and students.

Health Minister Gan Kim Yong, who is also the CDAC Chairman, said this at a media briefing after the CDAC's 23rd Annual General Meeting, held at the self-help group's building, on Friday (Jun 19).

He said: “This year, there is a significant shift in our programmes, both in terms of the workers' programmes - we are going to do a strategic review - and at the same time, we are also expanding our school-based student care centre and therefore, we will do as much as we can to help those who are needy.”

This year, the CDAC's efforts will include the opening of more school-based student care centres to provide educational and developmental support to students, especially those from underprivileged families.

With the experiences gained from operating its first two centres at Bendemeer Primary School and Chongfu School, it hopes to take on a bigger role in complementing the schools by providing educational and developmental support to students.

It will also conduct a strategic review of its workers' programme to better complement the national SkillsFuture movement. In addition, more programmes will be organised to keep seniors socially connected, and to encourage more to volunteer actively in CDAC activities.

The CDAC spent S$23.8 million last year on its programmes.

In 2014, CDAC core programmes served about 17,600 lower-income households. In particular, they saw a significant increase in the students target group. They helped about 16,000 students in 2014, almost 22 per cent more than the previous year."

Interesting to learn that CDAC is helping so many students DESPITE a significant budget for the Education Ministry, I think!

While it is always good to have the grass-root or the community helping itself, I cannot helped but wonder if this is due to the budget for Ministry of Education been insufficient or not channelled to the most optimal usages?

Anyway, I came across one or two cases of kids needing financial assistance to continue their education in the mainstream MOE schools have to go through a number of 'assistance schemes' from different agencies - governmental and non-governmental ones - to make the 'number for school fees, etc.' Surely there are rooms for improvement here without the beneficiaries having to complete Nth times the same basic information to qualify for the various 'assistance payments'!

Something to work on over the weekend by some smart government folks? One input. Many uses!
