"More than 400 courses available for seniors to upgrade themselves - CNA 16 May 2015
SINGAPORE: Seniors can now choose from more than 400 courses - from arts, culture and business, to culinary skills - to upgrade themselves in their later years.
As part of the country's jubilee celebrations, these courses will be offered free until the end of this year.
Seniors can also sign up for the courses at the 50Plus Expo at Suntec City Convention Centre until Sunday (May 17).
The expo, hosted by the Council for Third Age, aims to promote active ageing by providing a host of informative forum talks, hands-on workshops and educational activities.
The seniors can choose from a wide range of options to enrol in a course that best suits their preference.
Several courses are run by educational institutions and voluntary welfare organisations, and the seniors will get to study alongside younger students.
Senior Minister of State for Manpower and Health Amy Khor noted that it is common to see seniors living past 80 years old. She said that at 50 years old, it can be the start of a period of "second growth" where seniors learn and experience new things, and pursue new careers.
She said when the Ministerial Committee on Ageing held discussions on successful ageing last year, many seniors were enthusiastic with their contributions.
Dr Khor said: "Many of them also want to continue to contribute to our community through volunteerism."
The Council for Third Age partnered more than 160 voluntary welfare organisations and community groups to reach out to the seniors at the Expo."
The NEW old for me is 75 years old. So, anyone who is below 75 years old is YOUNG!
Lessons for me are:
1. as long as you keep yourself healthy, living to any age is fine!;
2. at the same time, to be able to live healthily, there is a need for us to be willing to become aware of our needs to CHANGE old and possibly bad habits and mind-set! It means stop behaving like 'we know it all. Been there. Done there. What more can anyone teach me!!';
3. living healthily means telling ourselves we can still do some of the so-called: 'young people's sports or activities'! Sure we will need to start VERY SLOW and listen to our bodies at the beginning. However, if the mind-set is: 'our bodies can adept much better than we give them credit for', we have a good chance of trying something new and be successful at it. Whatever we do originate from our thoughts. To overcome the inertia and create the momentum to move forward, starts with the minds then take small baby steps one after another, soon you will be surprised to see yourself doing things and activities that you thought were impossible.
Actually when you look close: impossible means: I M Possible!
So, welcome to the above 60- or 65- or 70-year YOUNG age Senior!! The BEST is yet to come. Go for it!! :-)
