Daily Lessons from Life 31 March 2015 - Singapore teen in court over anti-Lee Kuan Yew video

1/4 of 2015 is GONE! May we continue to work on our 2015 Resolutions in the next 9 months, including changes due to the passing of Mr Lee Kuan Yew, our main founding father.

"Singapore teen in court over anti-Lee Kuan Yew video - AFP  Mar 31, 2015

SINGAPORE - A Singaporean teenager arrested after posting an expletive-laden YouTube video attacking the country's late founding leader Lee Kuan Yew and Christianity was charged Tuesday with jailable offences including obscenity and hurting religious feelings. Amos Yee, a slight student with a thick mop of hair, smiled and fidgeted as charges were read to him in a district court. He was released on S$20,000 bail.

Outside the courtroom, his teary-eyed father clasped his hands and told reporters: "I would like to take this opportunity to say very sorry to PM Lee".

But his son later smiled and waved to reporters as they left the court building.

The controversial video has been taken down from the teenager's YouTube page but others have reproduced it in part or in full.

In an online petition to the Singapore government on activist website change.org, petitioners who described themselves as Christians have called for Yee's release. It had garnered more than 1,500 supporters by Tuesday afternoon. "Please release Amos Yee. We forgive him and desire he have a full life of contribution to his community ahead of him," read the letter."

Lessons for me are:

1. do we have to show the photo of his parents? How does it help?;

2. good to see the activist website change.org's petitioning to release Amos and help him to sort out the great bother he had gotten himself into. The petitioners described themselves as Christians no less! Their religion was insulted by Amos in his ranting click. It is noble and coming from their 'perhaps Amos is a confused child that need help rather than the hardest punishment possible'. Hopefully they are right but this will ONLY be known after, and if the court asked for, a psychiatric examination by qualified psychiatrists!;

3. the sorrowful father must be very distraught to have a son that got into a very big bother with very senior people in the government. He is sorry for what the son had done. Hopefully it is taken as it is and the laws take its due course through open hearing and etc. If Amos is mentally sound to face these charges, he has to be dealt with firmly without fear nor favour. It will be very important to find out HOW he has so much hatred in him and HOW he seems to believe the baseless accusations he made against Mr Lee. If he is doing this JUST to garner 'eye-balls or popularity' the court better set the precedence that this type of reckless behaviours have GRAVE CONSEQUENCES!

Responsible freedom of speech OFFLINE and ONLINE. It HAS TO BE!!
