Daily Lessons from Life 21-22 March 2015 - Mr Lee's Vigil and ISIS Wooing Maids in Hkg!

1. "Mr Lee Kuan Yew weakened further on Sunday: PMO - AFP Sunday, Mar 22, 2015"

Continued best wishes for him to live his life as comfortably as possible.

2. "ISIS said to be wooing maids in HK - The Straits Times Mar 21, 2015

HONG KONG - Recruiters for the Islamic State in Iraq and Syria (ISIS) militant group have reportedly targeted Hong Kong's Indonesian domestic helpers.

A maid agency told Oriental Daily News that many Indonesian domestic workers received what appeared to be ISIS recruitment leaflets from fellow Indonesians on Sunday. The pamphlet encourages maids to join ISIS, saying it would send them to "work" in China's Xinjiang region, but there are no details on the type of work they would be asked to do.

The flier has a simple design, with a photograph showing more than 10 women covered from head to toe except for the eyes, and carrying an ISIS flag. Two rows of words in Bahasa Indonesia are printed on the pamphlet - with one row telling readers that they are not dressed in the correct way, including their use of headscarves, and that they must be dressed like the women in the photo. The other row says people would be distributing the ISIS fliers and recruiting members in Hong Kong.

Ms Joan Tsui, the convenor of the Support Group for Hong Kong Employers with Foreign Domestic Helpers, expressed concerns that the maids may be persuaded by their compatriots to join ISIS.

"I am worried that some of the maids may be affected emotionally if they join the group," she said.

"They could be emotionally unstable and they may harm children in their care." She said that in the past, several maids had received leaflets promoting religious beliefs or wooing them to work in other countries, such as Russia, for higher wages."

Interesting twist to this ISIS saga.

Lessons for me are:

1. cults love to recruit among the vulnerable. The more hard-done by life and society the potential recruits feel, the likelier they will be die-hard fanatical converts!;

2. are the Indonesia and other Muslim maids be targeted? do they belong to the 'vulnerable' group as perceived by ISIS recruiters? Sure Muslim maids are targeted, Indonesians or not. Are they 'vulnerable'? Most are not especially when their employers treat them with respect and dignity. Unlike the recent monster employer who was put away in jail for abusing her maid in such inhuman and beastly manner that truly made civilised human being cringed and sick!;

3. of course, given the fairly big population of the Muslim country maids in Hkg SAR, it is very probably that even if just 1% of them took the baits, it will number around more than 1k people, assuming there are 100k Muslim maids in Hkg SAR? That is still 1000 too many ISIS converts!! It is an endless struggle. It will be. Fighting an invincible 'culture' is far more challenging than anyone any human being had taken in history!

May this NEVER happen in Singapore!!
