"Heaviest woman in the world loses 360kg - AsiaOne Mar 12, 2015
A 35-year-old woman in the US has lost a total of 360kg after undergoing numerous weight loss surgeries over the past few years.
Before and after photos show the astounding transformation of the once morbidly obese Ms Mayra Rosales who lost 80 per cent of her original weight of 470kg. She now weighs about 90kg.
According to various media reports, the woman from Texas used to be one of the heaviest people in the world.
Ms Rosales said that the women in her family had always been chubby, weighing between 200 to 220 pounds (90 to 100kg).
An undiagnosed thyroid problem also contributed to her ballooning weight, which left her bedridden and unable to leave the house.
Ms Rosales had been unable to stand up for years because her legs were unable to support her massive weight. Her organs had also started to fail.
Old photos showed her husband giving her sponge baths on a king-sized bed because she was unable to care for herself.
Ms Rosales began her weight loss journey, which was documented by a TV programme on cable network TLC.
Ms Rosales had to follow a strict, high-protein diet and lose about 270kg before she could undergo gastric bypass surgery.
The Mirror reported that Ms Rosales underwent a total of 11 surgeries, which included operations to remove excess skin after her drastic weight loss.
Ms Rosales told ABC News in an interview: "I have lost over 800 pounds (360kg). I don't even know how I survived that. It's a miracle of God. I really was dying.""
IT CAN be DONE!! That is the MOST important takeaway for me from this astonishing story!
Lessons for me are:
1. IT CAN BE DONE!! With utter focus and determination and the technologies today, the morbidly obese CAN help themselves. This is the LIVING example!;
2. It is PAINFUL and emotionally charged. While this news report did not reveal any STRUGGLES in this EPIC journey, I am SURE it had been an ultimate roller-coaster ride for Ms Rosales, her medical team and anyone associated in making this journey a success. Surely there must be doubtful moments, many even, when one or some or ALL wanted to give up and walk away! YET, for those who persisted and soldiered on, the final result is simply priceless! A LIFE is saved! While everyone who helped must be recognised, the BIGGEST applaud and admiration have to go to Ms Rosales. What a lady! What a class act!! To make it this far and MAINTAIN the newly achieved weight of 90kg!!;
3. while most morbidly obese people are due to genetic besides a very bad eating habit and living lifestyle, this case SHOWS that 'culture CAN overcome nature'! It takes away the convenient excuses from those who insist that they HAD TRIED EVERYTHING and GIVEN EVERY EFFORTS to manage the weight to the healthy level but simply cannot achieve!
Many of us KNOW what we need to do before our weights go scarily OUT-of-CONTROL. YET, to know is not to do. To DO requires a LOT more focus, concentration and effort.
Let's take the first step FIRST. Regardless of how SMALL it may be, JUST DO IT. Get started. Be it walking briskly for 20 mins each morning or evening or during lunch time. Do it. Be it eating NO fried foods everyday, JUST DO IT.
Bit by bit you do, bit by bit you will see the result, FASTER than you expect!
