"Doctor loses medical licence for selling codeine-laced cough syrup illegally - AsiaOne Feb 09, 2015

SINGAPORE - A doctor can no longer practise medicine in Singapore after being convicted of selling codeine-laced cough syrup wholesale to others.

Dr Ho Thong Chew's name has been removed from the Register of Medical Practitioners with effect from Jan 18 this year, the Singapore Medical Council (SMC) said in a statement on Monday.

To protect public interest and uphold the integrity of the medical profession, the Disciplinary Tribunal (DT) of SMC cited three main factors that led to Dr Ho's sentence:

- He was aware that Dhasedyl syrup, which contained codeine, was sold to the public without regulation over its recipients and that its sale could have caused harm to the public;

- He continued to sell the cough syrup wholesale even after his clinic was raided by the Health Sciences Authority (HSA);

- He knowingly sold an estimated 1,907 litres of Dhasedyl syrup without a proper license for five months to three patients who resold it for profit.On July 20, 2012, Dr Ho pleaded guilty to 12 charges of selling codeine-laced cough syrup without a wholesale licence and was sentenced to 7 1/2 months in jail and fined $60,000."

An unfortunate situation Dr Ho found himself in.

Lessons for me are:

1. it is puzzling on why a fully medical trained doctor would resort to this method to make money since in general GPs in Singapore do, mostly, make a decent living from practising medicines. Maybe there are other deeper reasons for his behaviours?;

2. IF NOT, it shows once again that while highly educated and trained professionals CAN BE highly intelligent or academically inclined BUT not necessarily possessed the integrity demanded of their professions!;

3. hopefully Dr Ho will live strong despite this disastrous showing and the severe punishment he is receiving after an open and fair trial. If there are some unique factors that pushed him to 'selling medicines to make money instead of practicing medicines that he had been trained', hopefully these are identified and cleared so that after he has served his sentences, he can pick himself up, along with his family's supports and love, to apply his professional knowledge, skills and experiences again. If he has truly learned his lesson and is a new man then!

Nothing beats been faithful to your profession! It does not happen naturally and must be consciously guarded against complacency and loss of original purpose of joining their professions.
