Daily Lessons from Life 03 February 2015 - M Ravi to contest next GE as independent in Ang Mo Kio

1. "M Ravi to contest next GE as independent in Ang Mo Kio - TODAY 03 February 2015

SINGAPORE: Lawyer M Ravi on Monday (Feb 2) declared in a hastily-called press conference his intention to contest the next General Election as an independent candidate in Ang Mo Kio constituency.

Sending the media the invitation roughly three hours before the press conference started on Monday afternoon at The Fullerton Bay Hotel, he spent nearly an hour unleashing a tirade against the Government for not treating Singaporeans with due respect and not putting their interests above those of foreigners.

His electoral campaign, he said, will focus on seeing Singaporeans “being put first”. He also brought up a range of issues he wants to tackle should he be elected. For example, he called for the four official languages here – Malay, English, Mandarin and Tamil – to be made compulsory in school curriculum to “promote equality in the languages”.

The lawyer, who has taken on a number of cases involving government leaders, including the recent defamation suit by Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong against blogger Roy Ngerng, said he chose to run in Mr Lee’s constituency because he (Mr Ravi) has a quarter of his relatives living there. He said he has not firmed up plans on who will run with him in the six-member Group Representation Constituency (GRC).

Mr Ravi also said he aspires to become the Prime Minister one day. He said he has set aside S$1 million for his campaign, and will announce more details of his manifesto on Friday."

Well well well. Looks like GE fever has griped one of the most controversial 'freedom fighter mode' lawyer too!

Lessons for me are:

a. man of conviction who wants to do something right for the public WILL step up and get into the fairly 'unloved' political arena. This is where one can make the MOST IMPACT to the way the people of a nation will live and behave!;

b. if Mr Ravi do go through with his intention to contest in the AMK GRC, and assuming he managed to find the other members to form a GRC team to contest against PM Lee's led PAP GRC team, it will be interesting. Hopefully we will hear solid debates and discussion of different points of view that will increase the awareness, appreciation and understanding of the voting public. This will be the biggest benefit for the nation!;

c. has the 'Singaporeans first' demand abated after the government acknowledged that it has, perhaps, erred to had let in too many foreigners in too short a time with too little preparation like social infrastructure and the 'readiness of Singaporeans' to accept this huge influx, despite repeated reminding by the government that 'the foreigners help create jobs for Singaporeans'! Of course, the last bit is the MOST controversial as quite some Singaporeans seemed to be STILL DO NOT GET IT!!

Mr Ravi, welcome to the political arena. May you continue to help sharpen the focus and quality of public discourse on issues dear and intimate to Singaporeans.
2. "Online portal for caregiving services launched - TODAY 03 February 2015

SINGAPORE: People who require caregiving services will now be able to book and confirm their appointments instantly online.

Caregiver Asia launched a new portal on Tuesday (Feb 3), which allows people to search and book services including respite, step-down and at-home care.

It also allows doctors, allied-health professionals and nurse aides to list their services on the portal. Practitioners can state their areas of specialty, along with their terms and conditions of service, giving them the opportunity to cast a wider net for those requiring care services.

Caregiver Asia chief executive Yeo Wan Ling said the failure to receive trusted and on-time care, especially when it comes to the care of a loved one, could lead to heartache and stress for a family.

“We believe that everyone deserves to have easy and transparent access to accredited, reasonably priced and quality care services,” she said.

The portal will also give those unable to work full time an opportunity to re-enter the workforce as independent health and care practitioners. Caregiver Asia will partner Silver Spring, a social enterprise that helps mid-career professionals find second careers.

“Through (the) portal, retired nurses and mid-career switchers, who have much to contribute in terms of their expertise and energy ... can find creative outlets to provide their services,” said Silver Spring founding partner and chief executive Helen Lim.

Caregiver Asia has plans to extend the portal to other parts of Asia, including Malaysia and Hong Kong, and hopes to build a network of one million caregivers across the region by year’s end.
Caregiver Asia was established last February and it took half a year to develop the portal."

It is good to use the power of IT to help caregivers find some help for sure. So, this is a good initiative that hopefully will take off and take root.
