1. "Pope makes emotional appeal for world's suffering children - Reuters Jan 18, 2015"
I REALLY like the questions he asked: "Why do children suffer?" of about 30,000 young people on the grounds of a Church-run university and also said: "I invite each one of you to ask yourselves, 'Have I learned how to weep, how to cry when I see a hungry child, a child on the street who uses drugs, a homeless child, an abandoned child, an abused child, a child that society uses as a slave'?"
IF we all have a positive answer to these questions, the world will be that much better and safer. Enough said. Just do it!
2. "Fury as Indonesia executes foreigners by firing squad - Reuters Jan 18, 2015
Brazil and the Netherlands recalled their ambassadors from Indonesia and expressed fury Sunday after Jakarta defied their pleas and executed six convicted drugs offenders by firing squad, including two of their citizens.
Convicts from Vietnam, Malawi and Nigeria, and one Indonesian, were also among those put to death just after midnight, the first executions carried out under new President Joko Widodo.
Indonesia has tough anti-drugs laws and Widodo, who took office in October, has disappointed rights activists by voicing support for capital punishment despite his image as a reformist.
Widodo, known as Jokowi, has taken a particularly hard line towards people on death row for narcotics offences, insisting they will not receive a presidential pardon as Indonesia is facing an "emergency" due to high levels of drug use."
Death penalty is so-called uncivilised. Which I agreed with it is meted out to petty theft and prisoners who had not kill - directly and indirectly.
Lessons for me are:
1. it could have been Singapore instead of Indonesia that has to face this 'fury' as Singapore has no mercy on drug smugglers too;
2. while I can appreciate the government of the home country of these criminals are obliged to ask for clemency for their citizens, they must understand that the laws on capital punishment for smuggling drugs had been around in Indonesia, and Singapore. Criminals who want to try their lucks REALLY have to be prepared for the ultimate penalty of death by firing squad, in Indonesia, and some other means in Singapore. There is REALLY no ground for argument! Period;
3. of course, the main thing the home country government can do for their citizens on trial for drugs smuggling is to make sure that the home country government's foreign affairs officials are in the host countries assisting in the trial of their citizens. There MUST NOT be any doubts that their crimes are proven to the standard exerted in the host country's laws. That an open and fair trial had been conducted. If the final verdict of the court is guilty as charge, the appeal processes be exhausted, including the ultimate pardon by the President or whoever had the legal right to offer clemency.
That done. The home country government had done its duties. It should, and MOST DO, let the host country carry out the punishment in accordance to its laws. Period.
May all who were caught with smuggling drugs be given an open and fair trial... Smugglers beware!!
