Daily Lessons from Life 05 January 2015 - Fernvale Lea flat buyers want refund over columbarium

Air Asia Qz8501 Updates Day 9 - Indonesia naval captain says may have located missing plane's tail section ReutersMonday, Jan 05, 2015: If this is confirmed, the 'Black Box' recorder will be found soon as it is supposedly located in the tail section of the plane!

"Fernvale Lea flat buyers want refund over columbarium - My Paper  Jan 05, 2015

Some upset would-be residents of Fernvale Lea have asked the Housing Board for a refund for their flats over the columbarium issue.

They conveyed this to Lam Pin Min, MP for Sengkang West, during a three-hour closed-door dialogue which was attended by 400 people.

Despite assurances from him that there would not be a crematorium or funeral-parlour services at the Chinese temple, a group gathered around a table where they could leave contact details for HDB to call them about a refund.

It is unclear how many eventually left their details on the list.

Dr Lam, giving a quick rundown of the dialogue, said: "They felt uncomfortable that such a (columbarium) service would be provided there and have requested that HDB look into their request for a refund."

The Urban Redevelopment Authority and HDB in a joint statement later in the evening said that with regard to the refund, they will look into the matter.

There will be 3,258 residential units in the vicinity of the temple, spread across Build-to-Order projects Fernvale Lea and Fernvale Rivergrove, and executive condominium Lush Acres.

The Straits Times understands that one of the points made at the dialogue was about how HDB should have been more upfront about the Chinese temple housing a columbarium.

Dr Lam said that it was indicated in the Fernvale Lea brochure for the new flats. "There is really nothing to hide," he added.

He also noted that it is not uncommon to have columbarium services at places of worship.

Three temples within Anchorvale - Puat Jit Buddhist Temple, Nanyang Thong Hong Siang Tng Temple and Chee Hwan Kog Temple - already have similar set-ups."

An interesting development.

Lessons for me are:

1. if there is no crematorium at the temple, I am a bit surprise some of the residents were upset since the fears of getting burned fleshes sticking to clothes hang out to dry in the sun, rumoured to be the case in the older generation of crematorium, are avoided!;

2. as for having funeral parlour services at the temple, it should NOT even be an issue since HDB dwellers regularly hold wakes at the void deck of their HDB flats! So, I am indeed puzzled by the residents who wanted a refund of the flats they had successfully been allocated! BUT then it is UP TO THEM and only THEY will know how they feel about having the columbarium in their backyard!;

3. actually if the residents that objected to this columbarium in their own backyard, they had been short-sighted as some people would LOVE to have one in their own backyard so that when they leave this world, they can be 'resident' at their old neighbourhood where they will be very much 'at home'! LOL!! Just being fastidious here!

Whatever it is, hopefully only a VERY MINOR group of people want OUT OF THIS DEAL for the reasons given. Hopefully, people will look beyond this. This is especially when columbarium does exist in other temples in other HDB estates. So, this is NOTHING news! In fact, NOTHING to be 'afraid of'!!
