Daily Lessons from Life 24-25 September 2014 - Singapore's population now 5.47 million, slowest growth in 10 years

Good news and sad news

Good news - congratulation to our swimmer, Mr Schooling for winning the 1st male Gold Asian Game medal after many years! And his other medals as well!

Sad news - one of my friends was sentenced to jail for a fatal accident. He was remorseful and had taken responsibility for this unfortunate death. May he be whole again after serving the sentence and that condolences to the deceased's family and EVERYONE affected move on with their lives from here. Blessing to all.

"Singapore's population now 5.47 million, slowest growth in 10 years - AsiaOne Sep 25, 2014

SINGAPORE - Singapore recorded its lowest annual population growth in a decade in the year up to June 2014, due to slower growth in the non-resident population. According to figures released in the Department of Statistics' Population Trends 2014 report, Singapore's total population was 5.47 million as of June 2014 with 3.87 million residents and 1.6 million non-residents.

The resident population comprised 3.34 million Singapore citizens and 0.53 million permanent residents. Singapore's total population in 2014 recorded 1.3 per cent growth, lower than the 1.6 per cent growth recorded in 2013. The number of Singapore citizens grew by 0.9 per cent, but non-resident growth slowed to 2.9 per cent from 4.0 per cent last year."

What does this mean?

Lessons from me are:

1. it was NOT as bad as the rumoured: 4 in 10 persons you meet in Singapore is a foreigner! 1.6m over 5.47m is only 29.3%. So, should not have 'integration' challenges! LOL!;

2. however, if we add in the PRs, the ratio becomes: 2.13m over 5.47m is 39%. Aah. This is closer to the kopi-tiam 40%! Maybe we do have some integration challenges to work on!;

3. we are still some way to go from the Population White Paper's projection or target or what-ever you want to call it of 6.9m. I am sure we will get there somehow. Integration work, by then, be honed to perfection so that every new citizens with emphasis on converting PRs (must convert once he/she hits the 5-year period) into new citizens first should be a walk in the par.

With the injection of new population, we will have more consumers and the world of commerce will continue to produce growth. With growth comes prosperity and the virtue circle perpetuate itself. Yes?

Honestly, I don't know the answers. Just keep the population growing for now as we need foreigners to create jobs for Singaporeans.??
