Daily Lessons from Life 26 June 2014 - A Good Way to Give?

MH370 Updates - Malaysia has a new Transportation Minister to takeover from the last Acting Minister from the unenviable task of searching for the missing plane and providing closures to the 'missing passengers' family members'.

Seoul-Jeju Ferry Disaster Updates - the daughter of one of the crew members committed suicide though it might not be linked to being depressed over her father's alleged negligence, together with the Captain and the rest of the 15-member crew.

"NY homeless angry at China tycoon's 'publicity stunt' - AFP  Jun 26, 2014

NEW YORK - A three-course lunch hosted by an eccentric Chinese millionaire for 250 homeless New Yorkers in a posh restaurant degenerated into fury on Wednesday when guests were denied US$300 (S$375) cash handouts.

It had seemed such a good idea. Recycling tycoon Chen Guangbiao last week took out ads in American newspapers promising a first-rate meal at the Boathouse in Central Park and US$300 each.

Guests were bused in and treated to a sit-down meal of seared tuna, filet mignon and seasonal berries, waited on by staff in suits and bow ties, but anger flared over the cash no-show. As Chen spoke to a gaggle of Chinese journalists while dessert was being served, one guest started shouting.

"Don't lie to the people!" Ernest St Pierre told AFP. "We came here for US$300 but now he's changed his tune." Chen announced through a translator that he was heading to the New York City Rescue Mission - which helped organise the lunch - and invited guests to join him there."

Mr Chen is famous or infamous depending on if you are a fan or not for his 'Great Wall of Money' Photos whenever and wherever he donates to charities or needy people and worthy causes in PRC. He claims, consistently despite some sharp criticism and even derision by those who opposed to 'Chen's way of charitable giving' as they felt it was too showy, and even disrespectful to those who needed the help provided!

Lessons for me are:

1. since Mr Chen has the dole/money, he can do what he wants. At he has been consistent! In the USA and in PRC!!;

2. his firm belief that by being flashy and getting lots of media PR exposure will encourage, entice or push some other with the money to join the bandwagon of giving may work for some. For others, it could well be a definite turn off! All I can say is if you hate it, give it a miss. If you like it, go make the promise a reality! It is that simple. Attacking his charity donating style is unhelpful;

3. is there a good way to give? I believe so. Mr Chen's style is not my favourite. When you have the fortune and you craved fame, it is understandable. However, if the giving is just so you get the photos ops, your intention is really questionable. Mr Chen's reasoning that others will catch winds of what he had done and go on to donate seems to imply that 'they' will do it for the publicity too! This is insulting.

Anyway, what he has given is peanuts (ok I know it is sensitive in Singapore to use this term) compare to his net worth and what he gave out in China.

The sinister ones said he is simply just trying to show the Yankees that Chinese now are RICH enough to give to the underclass of the one and only Super Power in the world!

Give because you can afford to. Do it with your name shown or anonymously because you want to. Expect the donation to be used properly for the purposes as described by the fund raisers. Best to give to causes that help the 'intended beneficiaries to learn to help themselves live independently'!
