"Taiwan MRT killer's parents offer public apology - The China Post/Asia News Network Wednesday, May 28, 2014
TAIPEI, Taiwan - The parents of the Taipei Metro stabbing assailant yesterday appeared at Jiangzicui Station to pay their respects and give condolences to the victims of the incident, followed by a public statement of apology.
Those present were taking part in the Chinese tradition, "The First Seven" (頭七), a rite that is traditionally observed as a day of respect whereby families memorialize their late family members after seven days following their death.
Cheng's parents knelt down repeatedly in front of the station while covering their faces to weep.
Cheng's father later gave a public apology to the victims' families, stating that he believes prosecutors would seek the death penalty for Cheng, and that they hope the case will go through quickly out of respect for the victims and their families.
Cheng's father concluded his apology, stating that though it pains him, he hopes the judge will pass the death sentence quickly and that, as Cheng's parents, they share partial responsibility for the mistakes of their son."
This is the WORST nightmare for any parents when they learned that one of their children became a mass random killer without a clue as it why!
I do not know how the kid and their parents are like and how close they are with each other. Regardless, unless the parents are primarily to blame because of years of ill-treating their son to the extend he developed this warp personality and the horrible fantasy of killing just for the sake of doing so, the parents should be left alone to grief. As they too had 'lost' a child.
Lessons for me are:
1. as I wrote a few days ago when this senseless killing took place that such unthinkable deed can happen in Taipei showed that one has to be prepared for anything! How would you react should you be caught in such a sad and sick situation?;
2. the subsequent actions or precautions taken by the Taipei authority were worth noting as they nabbed a supposedly 'wannabe copy cat' killer before he got his wish not longer after this reported killing!! 'Copy cat'! Again, you simply will not be able to understand how someone can kill just because someone else just did it! For the mentally disturbed, if it can be proven conclusively, should they be given a chance to be 'cured' or they should be put away for good through passing of the death sentence after an open and fair trial?;
3. whatever it is, this incident definitely has heightened my awareness and alertness whenever I travel overseas and in a crowded area like airport and train stations. I think I know what to do if I ever, touch wood, be caught in the middle of such a terrible incident. Hopefully not someone with gun but just knife.
Let us seek peace of mind in a disturbed world!
