"6 die of drug abuse at concert - New Straits Times Sunday, Mar 16, 2014
KUALA LUMPUR - Six people died overdosing on drugs taken at the Future Music Festival Asia (FMFA) 2014 in Bukit Jalil Stadium while three others are in critical condition.
City police chief Senior Deputy Commissioner Datuk Mohmad Salleh said the nine, aged 21 to 28, collapsed about 1.30am yesterday during Friday's event, which continued into the wee hours, after consuming drugs.
One person died at the scene while the other five died on the way to University of Malaya Medical Centre and Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia Medical Centre.
The three in critical condition include two Singaporeans.
Mohmad said police arrested 19 party-goers, including 12 foreigners, for possession of drugs throughout the two days of the concert.
"Investigations showed they obtained the drugs from locations outside of the concert venue," he said at a press conference in Cheras yesterday.
FMFA was scheduled for three days but organisers decided to call it off yesterday following police advice after the deaths.
"In the interest of public safety we have heeded the authority's advice to not proceed with Day-3 of festival. We appreciate the understanding of all parties and will share updates on this matter as soon as possible.""
Rock and Roll and drug abuses are forever intertwined? Surely there can be clean music right? It is so senseless to have people dying from drug overdoses, by choice when they consumed drugs, when the fate of 239 lives hang in the balance not by choice!
Lessons for me are:
1. condolences to the family of the 6 dead and hopefully the other pulled through aOK;
2. it is senseless when these folks decided to consume drugs by choice while the fate of 239 lives from the missing MH370 hang in the balance without any choice! It is very sad. For me, it is the biggest irony. Really!;
3. I love rock and roll and I know many of its biggest stars and acts had succumbed to drugs and overdosed a few! Still, musics can be clean. There are probably more clean musicians than 'drug addicted' ones. It has to be. Otherwise, the music industry would have been out of talents long ago!
How did they obtain the drugs? Why did they tempt death? I will never know as it is not something I will ever try. It is destructive and dangerous. In Singapore, we have an increasing trend of drug abuses, we must continue to be merciless toward drug traffickers though recently the courts have commuted a few drug traffickers' death sentence to life sentence due to a slight change in the laws. Hopefully, it does not embolden the drug syndicates. Be on guard. Be vigilant. Be ruthless when dealing with drug peddlers that can 'kill'!
