Daily Lessons from Life 27 January 2014 - 'Poly student' raising money for fake project

"'Poly student' raising money for fake project - The New Paper  Jan 27, 2014

A photo of a woman posing as a polytechnic student to collect donations for a fake fund-raising project called "Singapore Young Hearts" has been posted online.

The photo was posted by Ngee Ann Polytechnic's School of Health Sciences Alumni Facebook page on Thursday.

This comes after a warning from Tan Tock Seng Hospital's (TTSH) Facebook page about the same fund-raising scam on Oct 31 last year.

The New Paper reported then that a girl from a local polytechnic had asked for donations to help her school raise funds for a "charity" under TTSH.

The hospital said the Facebook post at the programme called "Singapore Young Hearts" was not registered under the hospital.

The School of Health Sciences Alumni Facebook page asked members of the public to help spread the word about the scam.

TNP understands that the school received the photo of a fake identification certificate with the woman's photo, particulars and a police permit number on it on Thursday before it put up the post.

Along with the photo, it posted: "Really need your help to publicise this. The level of forgery is very daring.

"If you note, there is even a fake police permit number and a forgery of our Director's signature. Help us spread the word and stop the culprits from harming our school's image."

In another update, the page also said the polytechnic and the School of Health Sciences will not go door-to-door to raise funds.

The page advised people not to donate, but to gather information of the individual and to take a photo of her identification card if they were approached. It said people should call the police when the individual leaves.

It is understood that about five cases in areas that include Yishun, Bukit Panjang and Yew Tee have been reported over the past year."

This is the LOWEST form of cheating in my opinion. Preying on the kindness of donors which may backfired on GENUINE charities seeking public donation to further their worthy causes!

Lessons for me are:

1. IF such cheats are caught, there is really no need to be merciful. They must be punished severely as such cheating can and will affect do gooders from doing good after they were cheated once or even twice!;

2. besides the 'fake' students, we also come across fake monks, fake nuns, and fake handicapped people who sell stuffs to raise funds. This is very distressing as the givers sometimes feel very silly when they found out that their good intentions were taken full advantage of by these cheats! They are traumatised as to what to do the next time someone ask for their donation for a 'good cause'! This should never happened! Shame on those cheats!!;

3. for me, whenever I give to these 'peddlers', I always make sure that they are real. Sure some people will say what is a dollar or two or even 5 or 10 dollars for charity. The key is: are these donations really going to the worth causes these people claimed they are for? Regardless of how much or how little one gives, it is RESPONSIBLE GIVING that count. Maybe we can spread the message far and wide so that these 'cheats' have no chance to take good hearted donors for a ride!!
