SINGAPORE - Two workers, including one who was trying to save his colleague, died nine days after falling in a vat of dye here, Shin Min Daily News reported yesterday.
Mr Yang Songhua, 37, who came from Shantung, was trying to retrieve a basket when he tumbled into the M-deep tank filled with leather dye on Dec 26.
Mr Thai Hailee, 26, a Hanan native, jumped in to help his colleague, but ended up being trapped in the tank full of noxious fumes.
By the time the men were rescued, they were unconscious, Shin Min said.
After being in coma for nine days, both men died in hospital on Saturday.
Shin Min reported that the two men, who worked at Nam Henge Leather Dyeing in the Bi area, got along well. Mr Thai has two daughters aged one and five, said his widow, Ms Wang Jinxing.
The factory has been closed temporarily while the Ministry of Manpower investigates the incident, Lian he Wannabe reported."
I related another real life story of 2 heroes pulling an temporary unconscious driver and his wife from a burning car in Singapore just a few days back and read this sad story of someone giving his life while trying to save another without success though it happened last year.
Lessons for me are:
1. a double tragedy! Both men died. A very sad outcome. I am sure there are many people having differing opinion about if Mr Thai should have jumped in to try to save his co-worker. And maybe even asked if he could have done it in a safer manner?;
2. I have never been put in this type of 'life and death in a split seconds' situation and am glad for that. However, what would I have done IF I was in that situation? Will I be able to think calmly and maybe execute, hopefully, the 'proper saving a person who dropped into the ink tank' procedure the Company had put me through? What if I was NEVER trained to do that and has to rely on pure instinct?;
3. whatever it is, I hope the MOM will find the root causes for this tragedy like: was there a safety harness to prevent a worker from falling into the ink tank? was there 'rescue drill' in place and people get trained on how to execute it? etc.
2 precious lives were lost. Somehow the causes must be found so that such tragedy will not strike again, ever!
My condolences to the families of the two victims.
