Explaining the reason for this move, Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong, the PAP's secretary-general, said that while the fundamental goals of the PAP remain the same, and have been set out in its constitution and pledge, it is time to interpret and update them for a new generation."
I do not know much about the PAP's Constitutions and their Pledge but it is good to learn and undersand what they meant in this day and age.
1. PAP's Constinutions - some quotes from PM Lee:
Our Constitution sets it out in Article II. If you look up the website you will find the Constitution there and I will just quote a few phrases to you.
"To safeguard the freedom, and advance the well-being, of Singaporeans"
"To build a multiracial society, fair, just and tolerant to all"
"To build a dynamic society which is disciplined and self-reliant, … and which also has compassion for the aged, the sick and handicapped, and the less fortunate"
"To provide equal opportunities for all Singaporeans"
These are GREAT ideals to achieve. I can live with them.
2. PAP's Pledge
"To build a vibrant, just and equal society, through achieving excellence by all, so that every citizen, regardless of race, language or religion, can enjoy a full and happy life".
I like it too. Very fundamental and expressed the universal desires of most normal human being. To live and enjoy a full and happy life!
3. What do these mean to me, an ordinary citizen of Singapore:
a. 'a just and equal society' must be one that are just and fair to citizens of all races, religions and their initial background;
b. 'a dynamic society that is disciplined and self-reliant' means Singaporeans must be disciplined and be self-reliance. Discipline is needed when exercising unpopular rational decision against arose emotional feeling. Discipline is needed when executing in very difficult and trying conditions. So, this is important. Self-reliant means not to become overly or just dependent on outsiders. We must nurture our local talent that can be competitive with the best the world can offer. It also means when social assistance is given out to the needy and less fortunate, they must learn to 'help themselves' in the process and NOT become dependent on hands-out!;
c. 'compassionate for the aged, the sick and handicapped, and the less fortunate' means respect for the elderly, take care of the sick and handicapped and the less fortunate. At the same time, the aged must be gracious and understanding and appreciative of the help extended. The 'less fortunate' must become self-reliant eventually after receiving 'help to help themselves'. Of course, for those exceptional cases where the beneficiaries are REALLY in no position to think and act for themselves, the 'self-reliant' ideal has to be put aside.
I will be studying more indepth the PAP Conventions' Summary to understand how the dominant political party that formed the government of Singapore since independence will continue to take care of Singapore. It is an important matter to know.
