"Singaporeans seen as happiest among residents in 4 Chinese-majority territories - China Daily/Asia News Network Oct 31, 2013
People on the Chinese mainland, Taiwan, Hong Kong and Singapore think life in Singapore is the most desirable, according to a recent survey.
The survey, conducted by consultancy groups in the four economies, began last month and asked participants to evaluate their residence, income, employment, education, health, satisfaction with life, balance between work and life, security, government governance and environment.
More than 32 per cent, 48 per cent and 51 per cent of participants from the Chinese mainland, Hong Kong and Taiwan said living in Singapore was the most satisfactory. More than 40 per cent of the respondents from Taiwan shared their view.
The survey was conducted on the mainland by the Horizon Research Consultancy Group in Beijing; in Hong Kong by the Hong Kong Economic Journal and the Hong Kong Institute of Asia-Pacific Studies; in Taiwan by the Global Views Monthly; and in Singapore by the marketing department of Singapore Press Holdings.
The survey was based on the better life index of the Paris-based Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development."
Well it sure feel good to think that other people think living in Singapore is the BEST!
Lessons for me are:
1. if you have never really lived and worked in a foreign country or territory for more than 1 year, it will be foolish to try to form a credible opinion about life in that foreign place!;
2. life on paper or as a tourist, a not too poor one, in a foreign place will never be able to help you to get to know the people, the culture, the good, the bad and the ugly. It is as simple as that. In fact, if you are interested in the culture and social and historical things about a foreign place, you will get a lot MORE insight from watching some special documentary by National Geographic Channel or Discovery Channel or even some of the bolder and innovative local TV stations. Some accesses to the museum, scholars of repute, etc they have can NEVER be available to ordinary folks or even just rich tourists!;
3. what do I honest feel about this story? Well, it is good that some people in a foreign place think that living in Singapore would be most satisfying for them. In the 4 major Chinese-dominated places compared, I am not sure if rural Taiwan is not better than Singapore - City and Rural (if we still have any rural area to talk about in Singapore).
For me, probably 'retiring' in Taiwan will be fun. Singapore is not bad. China will need to be rich or be able to live in some really unexplored area with a healthy body and mind. As for Hong Kong, it is the last choice though it is a very vibrant city for sure.
