Daily Lessons from Life 28 October 2013 - China doctors protest after murder by patient

"China doctors protest after murder by patient - AFP Oct 28, 2013

BEIJING - Chinese hospital staff protested on Monday after a patient killed one doctor and wounded two more, local media said, in the latest violence to hit the country's overburdened medical sector.

Dozens of doctors and nurses wearing white coats and blue surgical masks crowded outside their workplace in Wenling, in the eastern province of Zhejiang, photos posted on the major web portal Tencent showed.

The demonstrators held signs saying "Protect the safety of medical staff" and calling for respect, as crowds gathered around them.

Lian Enqing, 33, a patient who had been unhappy with the results of a minor nose operation, charged into the premises on Friday, police said on their verified account on Sina Weibo, a Chinese version of Twitter.

He stabbed to death an ear, nose and throat specialist and attacked two others before being subdued by security guards, police said.

The hospital said on its official Weibo account that the three doctors "were all wounded while seeing patients".

Reports of ordinary Chinese killing doctors surface periodically, reflecting deep discontent with the country's health sector.

Doctors often have too many patients to attend to fully and may reportedly supplement their modest incomes by taking bribes for better care."

My Chinese friends in PRC lamented this senseless killing and wish that the patients and the public cna be more symphatetic towards the medical doctors, nurses and workers. Yet this is the sympthon of a systemtic malices/mealiease.

The lessons for me are:

1. there MUST be compassionate and competent medical doctors and personnel out there. Surely the murderous patient in this case if one of the few that got it so wrong as to take away another life!;

2. what can be done to change the WRONG perception that 'medical personnel' must be bribed before better medical treatment can be had? It has to be from the hospital administrators right down to everyone in the value chain being mindful of doing the right things. Medical personnel are paid properly. If the state has to step in to subsidise, so be it. If everyone is doing the right thing, it is likely that no inflation of pay will occur. No 'hidden' cost to medical treatment, medicines and equipments, etc will be present;

3. medical personnel and patients relationship. No one wants to be sick. When they are, the experience of being treated must be one of mutual respect and acceptance. If there are no unrealistic demand for money, there will be less stress on the patients and the medical personnel will not be overly hated since they are not 'money blood suckers'. Since they are not money blood suckers, surely the hatred that some harboured against them can no longer be justified! Yes? :-)

Will this killing stop? Will the protest stop as it is no longer necessary? I hope so. I honestly do.
