Daily Lessons from Life 05 September 2013 - Closure of major expressway due to flooding not acceptable: Vivian Balakrishnan
"Closure of major expressway due to flooding not acceptable: Vivian Balakrishnan - The Straits Times Sep 05, 2013
Dr Balakrishnan said that culverts to the south of the Ayer Rajah Expressway (AYE), which was the worst hit area on Thursday, have to be expanded in the "immediate term" to improve drainage. Work on expanding the Sungei Pandan Kechil canal that overflowed would begin by 2015 or 2016 if plans go ahead.
Many parts of Singapore reported moderate to heavy thundery showers on Thursday morning, resulting in flashfloods and traffic jams in some areas.
Flashfloods occurred at Alexandra Road, near the junction of Delta Road, and Commonwealth Avenue/Commonwealth Drive, near Commonwealth MRT station. But the floods have subsided by 9.48am, according to the PUB."
This extreme weather, mild for some countries, is really causing havocs and lots of concern in Singapore.
Lessons for me are:
1. most human being do not really understand what is going on with our earth weather system except those scientists and hardcore fanatics. For me, it just seems that the rains get heavier and more intense and caused lots of troubles for city like Singapore. Small, compact and cannot afford, or no longer use to, flooding!;
2. since only a very small percentage of human being knows the daily anti-earth and non-ecologically friendly practices by human being are, some said not enough solid scientific evidence to prove so, impacting the weather patterns and causing extreme swings between too hot and too cold, too dry and too much water, there is little chance that the harmful patterns will be reversed anytime soon!;
3. so maybe this type of 'inconvenience', as long as no lives are lost, are good to remind us that, maybe, just maybe, ALL of us should care about if our daily practices are anti-earth and not ecologically friendly. If they are, perhaps we should STOP now before it is really too late. Stop now and then REVERSE. Help promote green practices. Help our eco-system to survive and get to a steadier state. Even for the selfish reason that we DO NOT want to be 'inconvenient'! If so, there is hope. :-)
