Daily Lessons from Life 22 August 2012 - Road Safety for Cyclists and...

2 pieces of news to comment on:

1. Road Safety for Cyclists

A cyclist was killed in a road accident involved 3 other cyclists and a lorry. Not the first time a relatively young life was taken away on the road in recent months. His friend wrote to the government officials imploring the government to act to increase the safety of cyclists.

Lessons for me are:

a. take immediate actions to BRIGHTEN UP the top 10 most popular cycling routes in Singapore as many of them are in remote parts of Singapore and the cyclists like to ride in the early morning;

b. in conjunction with action a. suggested above, to put up PROMINENT posters/billboards and signage along these routes to reinforce and REMIND cyclists and drivers of the danger and need to look out for each other;

c. re-double educational efforts for cyclists and drivers. Never ending though it also cannot prevent human errors and complacency;

d. accept the danger of riding on Singapore road and be extra careful when riding the bicycles. Not an easy choice but it is the fact.

May we reduce accidents involving cyclists to the minimum.

2. Someone got killed over a debt of S$12 in Malaysia!

Senseless killing or heat of the moment killing? Whatever it is, another life lost so cheaply. It is really hard to fathom how human mind work sometimes.

Lessons for me are:

a. when emotion runs high, rationality takes a back-seat. A constant mantra I have been chanting all the time. Such killing really can only be committed when emotion went out of control!;

b. be reminded that when life and death is involved, we simply have to practice HARDER the techniques of calming down quickly. When the emotion is under controlled, rationality has a chance to break through and resolve whatever problems, challenges or issues we are facing.

Surely money is not worth the life of a human being! Rationality agrees readily. So, focus on controlling one's emotion.

May we have lesser hot-headed people and more calmness among the human species!
