Daily Lessons from Life 04-05 August 2012 - More Gold and Human Nature

4 August 2012

More gold medals for China or USA. They are supposedly trying to show which nation is more powerful with the medal counts.

This is really childish and nonsensical in my opinion. A big nation is one who acts with great humility and total self-confident regardless of how others see them. This is true strength!!

As I had lamented earlier, the Olympics Game is more a commercial event than a celebration of sporting spirits. While it is commonplace to see scenes of jubilation, pumping of fists and thumping of chests by the victors, I longed to see the particularly inspiring TV clip of a team of relay runners celebrating wildly as if they had just won the Olympics medal when they actually just came in second and broke their own personal best records. This is what I want to see and how I like to associate Olympics Game with. To be the BEST that you can BE! To participate and share in the joy of sports!!

YES. Called me an idealist or a fool. I DO NOT care!!

5 August 2012 - Law Minister said: Corruption is kept in check in Singapore and it is a matter of human nature and NOT the result of meritocracy

With the recent spates of corruption cases initiated by the government agency in charge of corruption in Singapore, CPIB, against a number of high ranking civil servants, people are questioning the cornerstone strategy of 'paying high wages to keep civil service corruption at bay'.

While it is true that human has a failing. It will be unwise to attribute it to 'human failing' whenever corruption cases are discovered. Singapore has a world class civil service and we have the smartest people working there, dedicating themselves to serving the public and making Singapore strong and safe. Precisely because these are smart people, they have to double their efforts to guard again 'human failing'! To keep to the straight and narrow path is their aspiration and they must be on the look out for any possible chance of 'human failing'. Self-discipline is important for sure. So are the vigilant check-and-balance system put in place independent of who runs at. Anyone who manned this system WILL uncover wrong doing if they were any! That is the ultimate guarantee. To err is human. Yet, the human who did not err till the day he or she leaves this world is most admired. Not easy. But worth it!!
