Daily Lessons from Life 25 July 2012 - Sex for 'A' grade NUS law prof arrested

"Sex for 'A' grade NUS law prof arrested - AsiaOne Edvantage Jul 25 2012

For the first time in Singapore, a lecturer has been arrested for giving an 'A' grade in exchange for sex.

A law professor from the National University of Singapore (NUS) is under investigation for giving out a good grade in exchange for sex, The New Paper reported on Wednesday, July 25.
According to the paper, it is the first case of its kind in Singapore.

The professor was apparently called up together with several other colleagues by the Corrupt Practices Investigations Bureau (CPIB) in April and was subsequently placed under arrest. A fellow colleague had bailed him out, reported The New Paper.

The lecturer had been practising in a top law firm for several years after having graduated from a top overseas university, The New Paper discovered. He then switched to a teaching career in the 1990s.

The 23-year-old fourth-year law student, who has since graduated, is currently a pupil in a local law firm.

She has been described by her friends as a lively and ambitious person. She had told some friends about the incident believing that it had blown over.

Their arrangement was not a one-off and she had sex with him on several occasions.

According to the lawyers who commented on the case, corruption is not limited to monetary benefits and can be in the form of sex and gifts.

NUS and CPIB have declined to comment as it is an ongoing case. The university told the paper that they are aware that there is ongoing investigation regarding one of their staff members and they are cooperating with the authorities."

This is really strange. This piece of news is seriously challenging my naivety as I though such story are only fiction instead of real life drama!

Lessons for me are:

1. is this a sex-for-grade or a student-lecturer sexual relationship? If it is the former, the lecturer is wrong for sure. If it is the latter, it will be harder to decide if it is right or wrong?;

2. of course, if the lecturer is a married man, then the laws is clear. He has committed adultery. Even if he has an unhappy marriage, he is still wrong legally if his spouse charged him. Being a lawyer, he should know better!;

3. sex is but just part of a normal human being life. Hopefully it is not another of those 'celebrities' sex addiction situation even though the lecturer may not be a celebrity but now potentially can be - for the wrong reason.

The recent spate of such sexual indiscretion scandals is a reflection of the decaying of moral standard in Singapore or just that the attitude towards casual sex has become a non-issue? Is this desirable? Should society judges it harshly?

Let's see how this case develop ... The supposedly young 23-year old will have something to say or answer to as well.
