Daily Lessons from Life 09 March 2011 - Tecahers who bullied!

"Teachers who bully The Star/Asia News Network | Tue Mar 8 2011

Bullying doesn't just occur among students. There are teachers who pick on and intimidate students too.

IT may have seemed like a harmless joke to secondary school teacher Mrs Lim* (not her real name) when she told her female students to quit school and become prostitutes but to the girls it was an outrageous remark .

Parents of her students reacted to the gross insults. They were upset that the teacher had belittled the girls in such a manner.

"It saddens me that the students had to hear those words from their own teacher," says Mrs Tan* who was equally upset with the teacher's snide remarks."

A joke that is never going to be a good one in this circumsatnace!

Lessons for me are:

1. certain jobs have certain expectations and right so. To be a teacher, you simply got to be extra careful with your words and deeds as you are supposed to be a role model. No excuses for slipping!!;

2. but it paid so poorly and yet have such high expectations. Well, it is a vocation and not simply a job though modern days' circustances likened it to just another income making job for many!! Called me overly idealistic or unreasonable. It is how I feel. To be a teacher, you have to have the love, the patience and the discipline to be one besides being competent to teach, guide and be role model to the students;

3. maybe the teacher has seen too many 'harmless' jokes on TVs! Some of the American trash, in my opinion, though some Grammy winners like 'Glee!'? where teachers and students seemed to be 'different'!

May she repent and may all teachers and teacher-to-be realized that it is a vocation. It is the best career in the world if you love doing it. Otherwise, you may jolly well misled the kids!! Think about it.
