Channel NewsAsia "Woman driver attempts to bribe police after drink driving arrest - 04 October 2010
SINGAPORE : A 35-year-old woman who was arrested for drink driving found herself faced with another charge of attempted bribery.
She had tried to bribe four police officers with S$12,000 in return for not conducting further breathalyser tests on her despite being warned that it is an offence to try to bride law enforcement officials.
The car she was driving had hit several parked vehicles at an open car park early Saturday morning."
I am not sure what was the circumstance of her drink drive offence. I am not sure what did the content of alcohol in her blood being more than 2 times the legal limit do to her driving either. Sufficient to say that she should not be driving given that she drove her car into several parked vehicles at an open car park! She was a danger to herself, and more importantly, to other road users!!
Lessons for me are:
1. if you drink, don't drive. This message has been repeated unteem times paid for with the public fund as well as by the PR budget of the responsible alcohol beverage producers. I guessed it is easy to listen to or read about or see materials related to 'If you drink, don't drive!' but it is all together another thing to be able to 'practice responsible behaviors'!!;
2. it is predictably irrational when you are so focused on getting yourself out of a tight spot that you will try anything. Even in a land known for being very strict with execution of the laws by the law enforcement officials. Knowing the risk and being warned about it, yet, she tried. It is irrational behaviors but yet so predictable!;
3. this incident will salvage some dented credibility of the law enforcement agencies after a recent spates of frauds and/or offences committed by our usual highly trusted civil servants. We need to continuously reinforce such right behaviors by our law enforcement officials. Singapore being so small and with so little resources, the integrity of our law enforcement authorities must be maintained and defended at all costs!
May the driver be given the fair sentences her initial drink driving deserved and perhaps on her 2nd charge of bribing being a fair one too as she probably were not thinking straight!! Punt intended since she could not drive straight too at that time!
