Daily Lessons from Life 23 June 2010 - 'Killer' Lorry Ferrying Workers?

In the last few weeks and as recent as last few days, lorries ferrying workers met with accidents and injured more than 10 of them with a few deaths thrown in. So, it is a serious life and death decision.

The Authority is aware of this and the accidents and the associated injured and death were often rationalized away as 'not cost effective' by the employers and not taken up seroiusly by the authority! Maybe it is just my speculation but then how else can you explained the laws requiring employers to provide PROPER transportation for their workers to and from work sites were debated and deemed necessary and yet given a few more months before full enforcement will be started?

Lessons for me are:

1. when a good policy or laws is conceived and life and death are on the line, expediency must take precedence! Do not wait!! Any delay will result in another needless injuries or deaths!;

2. While it is good to be pro-business and consider about cost to the employers, it is wrong to save cost at the expense of exposing the workers, cheap workers if I may add, to the risk of injury or death by sitting them at the back of an open top lorry!!;

3. priority must be clear. Very clear!! We cannot put a price on a human's life unless we want to contract an assisin to kill him or her!! So, if we are the leaders, we MUST be clear about our priority. Life always comes 1st before dollar and cents!! When the employers were FORCED to take care of the transportation of the workers, they will find a way to pay for it!! Trust them to do this!!

May the rules to ferry workers on proper transportation be implemented immediate to prevent unnecessary death and injury.
