Daily Lessons from LIfe 08 May 2010 - A VPO Session

Well, there is no significant news to comment on so I will talk about the extremely warm weather in the last 2 days! It is unbearable if you have to be outdoor and walk under the hot sun! It simply takes no effort to work up a sweat or perspiration as you can produce it just by standing up or sitting down doing nothing!

OK. This is not the place to vent about weather! I can do it at the world summit of climate change or something! ;-)

Actually I want to write about the Volunteer Probation Officer (VPO) work that I performed this afternoon. I have been doing this for the last few years volunteering for MYCS Probation Services Branch as a seminar assistant to the full-time PO.

We have the smallest number of participants this time. Only 2 families turned up. What struck me is one of the probationer's slightly non-plus behavior about the probation. I am worry for him as his dad is also not very sure how to handle him despite his insistence that he wants to turnover a new leaf.

Actions speak louder than words. In the journey of probation, like in any change process, it is not about knowing what to do, or the experience of 'I have done it before', or I will do it. It is all about: doing it! Are you doing it? If you are NOT, you are NOT!!

I normally share with the parents on how to help the kids successfully go through their probation period of 12-36 months. Sometimes I see some recognition that what I shared may just work for them as they had not considered those techniques or methods of communicating with their child. When that happened, I am energized and fueled with optimism.

Just that I did not get that feeling this afternoon. Maybe it is the warm weather.

I remembered the story I shared with others before: in volunteer work, you do your best. The rest is up to the participants themselves to decide what they want to do with the rest of their lives. They are young and they should have a long and wonderful life ahead of them if they can pick themselves up and change their behaviors for the better.

It is time to energize myself by saying to myself: keeping doing and contributing what you can, that you have full control. When they changed for the better, it is because they got it and not because of you!

All the best to the probationers and their parents and guardians - always.
