Daily Lessons from Life 06 January 2010

"UN suspends Somalia food program - Jan 06, 2010 Reuters

The U.N.'s World Food Program suspends work in southern Somalia amid growing violence."

Somalia. An enigma for me. A country in internal conflict. A country known for its piracy in and around the Bay of Arden. A country with many people dying from hunger, starvation and malnutrition than the deaths from its internal conflict. A country where many countries, and the UN, has tried to help but to no avail.

I will never understand why the people decided to fight each others. For religious or tribal or economic reasons I do not comprehend. Unless they are not Somalians! They are 'A' or 'B' of Somalia!!??

Lessons for me are:

1. the world is moving ahead, though some will questioned if it is a good thing or bad, while Somalians lived on hands-out and die haphazardly without any meaning! Is this what the majority of the people want? I doubt so;

2. can human being ever be helped to see a bigger picture of just self, or just a community, or just a race, but instead as a nation in this case. If they can, will they be able to understand that saving a precious human life is the most important thing to do unless saving one will endanger the other! Can they see there is not always a need for trade-off?;

3. does religion played a role in the internal conflict of Somalia? I don't know enough to comment. Can the people decide their own fate if they really want to? I believed so. When will the people who are suffering, and they are in the majority, decide that 'enough is enough' and that they want peace and stability so that they can build prosperity and happiness. Must they be taught to do this or they will, as a natural need, take the initiative themselves when the prospect of 'business as usual' will mean 'end of life for many of them'?

Somalia. All the best to you and your people. Only they can decide. No amount of hands-out will do. No amount of ransoms paid to your pirate will do.
