Daily Lessons from Life 13 December 2009

"Thaksin provokes Thailand with Cambodia visit - Sun, Dec 13, 2009 AFP

PHNOM PENH - Thailand's fugitive former premier Thaksin Shinawatra landed in Cambodia Sunday, setting the stage for another diplomatic fracas between the neighbouring countries."

An unfortunate story for Thailand. An unfortunate turn of events for Mr. Thaksin. A person whom I once believed could do a lot of things for Thailand and the people of Thailand with his wealth and business savvy. Now, I am not so sure.

Lessons for me are:

1. you can be smart and business savvy and created a lot of wealth for yourself, and hopefully many more people who believed in you and follow you, you still must remember that if the intention is impure or colored, you will not be successful on a sustainable basis. You will not get most people's agreement. There will be critics;

2. while it is important for you to 'get yourself back in favour or power', it will be a disservice if the benefits of the majority are prejudiced as in this case. If Mr. Thakin succeeded in getting himself back in favour or power due to a potential war between Cambodia and Thailand, it will be a big mistake!;

3. there will always be people willing to be a tool for people with power if they can get some benefits for themselves. This is potentially what is happening in this situation. Mr. Thaksin will have to be very careful that he not alienate his supporters who like him but will consider the benefit of Thailand before him.

I sincerely hope that this situation will not get out of control as South East Asia cannot and do not need a war between 2 neighbours.
