Daily Lessons from Life 12 October 2009

No Worthy News Headlines for me to comment on today!

Well, just watched the news on TV in Hong Kong that the riots in Xinjiang resulted in sentencing of death sentences to a few culprits. While I am not sure if the due justice process has been observed, it is not surprising to me on the severe penalties being meted out.

Hundreds of life were lost in the ensuing incidents driven by racial hatreds. This cannot be allowed. The perpetrators have to pay a heavy price as and when they were found guilty.

Lessons for me are:

1. racial harmony cannot be taken for granted;

2. decades of peace and harmony can be shattered with just one insensitive act. No effort can be spared to continuously work on peace and harmony. Just like in Singapore, we do not condone any violation of the guidelines of no entry into racial, languages and religions line. Everyone knows the rules and everyone knows how hard the authority will come down on any violators;

3. when peace and harmony is shattered, it will take double or treble the efforts to heal it. It will take double or treble the time to heal it. It s not something we want to try in Singapore. The price will be far greater than what happened in Xinjiang. That's a territory within a country. Ours is a country! Period!!

May we all continue to look out for would be violators of our sacrosanct boundaries on races, languages and religions!
