Today is 28 February 2009! The last day of the 2nd month of 2009! Wow! How time flies!!
"Channel NewsAsia - 28 February 2009
SINGAPORE: Over 2,000 people took part in a special relay walkathon on Saturday morning to spread the message of racial harmony.
Led by Jurong GRC MP, Halimah Yacob, the walkers made their way from the Church of St Mary of the Angels in Bukit Batok past the Ar—Raudhah Mosque to the Zu Lin Temple, where the baton was handed over to Hong Kah GRC MP Ang Mong Seng.
Participants then headed to the Hai Inn Temple where Community Development, Youth and Sports Minister, Vivian Balakrishnan was waiting.
The seven—kilometre route ended at a carnival highlighting the culture and religions of the ethnic groups."
Singapore has often being praised for it's racial and religious harmony and held up as the best example to learn from around the world. This is indeed commendable and something to be really proud and please about.
This harmony is earned! Singapore leaders realized the importance of such harmony. Singaporeans of all races and religions understood this harmony to be the foundation of extended stability so that prosperity can be pursued by everyone!
Lessons for me are:
1. if something is good for everyone, it is worthy to expand extraordinary efforts to maintain it and even improve upon it!;
2. the extraordinary efforts must also be seen by ALL so that it helps to reinforce to all races and all religious people that everyone is working hard together to keep the harmony going. It does not just happened! It takes conscious actions taken by all to publicise the efforts. It is communication at it's best!!;
3. as leaders, we have to be at the forefront of the movement. We have to show we truly and sincerely believed and are committed to this value. That all races and all religions are equal! Each one is free to practice any faith they had chosen as long as they are not subversive and/or teaching evil deeds!
I applaud the efforts by the government, the community leaders and the grassroots folks for this walk. It demonstrated the uniquely Singapore lifestyle of multi-racial and multi-religion in harmony! May it last forever as everyone continuously be vigilant and diligent in keeping up the effort!
