Daily Lesson from Life 29 September 2008

There is no worthy news headlines for me to comment on today! Shocking! Maybe the AsiaOne.com website is no longer interesting besides the 'sex sell' headlines that I don't find meaningful to comment on!

So, let me related a story I learned from the Internet on leadership:

There was a bird flying to escape the winter but failed! It was frozen in mid-air and fell to the ground. A cow came over and 'poohed' on it. The cow dung kept it warm and save it's life. As it broke out from the dung, it was so happy that it started chirping away. Then came a cat who heard the singing and ate the bird!

The morale of the story was: not everyone who give you 'shxt' is your enemy, and when you are in deep 'shxt' don't open your mouth!!

The question we need to ask really is: if we are working diligently and whole-heartedly with care and planing but the results were not satisfactory and we are in a jam, should we open our mouths and ask for help or should we just shut up?

The answer really depends on: is your boss or supervisor like the cat that eat the bird? If it is, then we will shut up and let the issue explores in our boss or supervisor presence!

So, as leaders, we must create an environment where our people are encouraged to voice their concerns after they had tried their level best to resolve the challenges but still need help. Our behaviors toward bearers of sincere but bad news will decide if they will tell us the truth so that we have time to re-prioritize or re-allocate resources to salvage the situations!!

Truth will only be told to one who is prepared to listen to the unpleasant!
