It is Budget2020 today! 2.18: an auspicious number or day per some superstitious or traditional Chinese folklore! Never mind this as each year, i think 2.18 is the Budget day, n not every year we hv a good year!
Putting up the Budget is obviously a complex n big task.
The challenge has gone up with a Special Line Item called: COVID-19 Package.
Specially 2 help the industries that r hardest hit by the COVID-19 epidemic like tourism, FnB, hospitality, pt-2-pt transportation like taxi/coaches/PhD, airlines/cruises, MICE, etc.
Most of the major costs of doing biz r: rental n wages!!
For rental, besides a few very big private landlords, most of the others r GLCs like CapitalLand, MapleTrees, Ascenda, etc., n public stat boards like PSA, JTC, NEA, etc.
So, as long as they r willing to reduce their OWN COSTS, esp mgt wages, they can reduce the rental charged n still n profitable!!
As 4 building capacity n capability via training or up- orbre-skilling, not sure how effective it can b or wondering if we hv concrete numbers to show after up- or re-skilling, how many get permanent reasonable paying jobs? while there r help 4 those 40s n 50s yrs old folks with more 1-time skillsfuture grant, again what is the Return on Training Investment here? did they get a reasonably good paying job 4 more than a yr?
All the subsidies, grants, top up, etc. r just complicating issues. Q is: r the root causes of the no job 4 local workers n local talents due to LTs r uncompetitive in Sgp or there r just too mamy FTs? If it is the former, Sgp has a much deeper fundamental problem!!
Will need to check in details each line tomorrow n as the Committe of Supply of each ministry present their detailed plans over the coming week.
Would really like to see LINE by LINE how the Revenue r from n how each line expenditures were spent!
