"India leads the world in internet shutdowns
REUTERS: In an unprecedented move, the Indian government suspended mobile internet services in parts of the capital New Delhi on Thursday, as protests over a citizenship bill seen as discriminating against Muslims escalated.
As of 2018, India led the world in internet shutdowns, according to a report by internet advocacy group Access Now, accounting for 67per cent of the total recorded worldwide.
An internet shutdown is a suspension of internet access ordered by the authorities. Telecoms companies then turn off the cellular networks at transmitting towers providing mobile phone internet services in the area.
Countries with far more restrictive control over the internet, such as China and North Korea, did not feature prominently in the numbers compiled by Access Now because of the lack of publicly accessible data, the group noted.
Since January 2012, there have been 373 halts in India's internet service, according to the Software Freedom and Law Center (SLFC), which has been tracking the suspensions since then."
Is this practice Good, Bad or Ugly?
It is rather extreme n probably signalled a situation, bad one where security n lives r lost, that had gone out of control n still spiralling!
In such situations, cutting off the sources of social media that r instigating more violence n killing, must b the short term "best" fix!
Of course, to ensure longer term n sustainable peace n stability, the root causes of what RILED the violent n emotional people must b understood, addressed n permanent solutions implemented. Especially during peace time. Before any critical issues in the failt lines be identified n resolved through 2 ways dialogue with a problems solving approach! Otherwise, wgen Emotion got arose so much that Rationality has no chance at all!!
I especially salute the Young people with a Matured Minds. A rare feat while "old people r supposed to b wiser" since they were supposedly more experiences!!
